A major highways infrastructure project in Oxfordshire is seeking an experienced Section Engineer to take ownership of a defined section of works on a complex highways and structures scheme. This is a senior site-based engineering role, sitting between the Site Engineer and Site Agent, with responsibility for coordinating engineering activities across bridge structures, reinforced concrete elements, and associated highways works. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring technical accuracy, buildability, and safe delivery of structurally complex elements of the project. Engineers with proven experience on bridges, highway structures, or heavy civil engineering works are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Take engineering ownership of a designated section of works, including bridges and structural elements
- Lead and coordinate Site Engineers within your section
- Oversee setting out, surveying, and quality control for structural and highways works
- Review and manage drawings, specifications, and technical queries (RFIs)
- Ensure works are delivered in accordance with design, specification, and programme
- Plan and sequence engineering activities to support construction milestones
- Liaise closely with designers, subcontractors, and the site management team
- Supervise subcontractor works, particularly RC, formwork, piling, and structural packages
- Monitor quality inspections, test plans, and as-built records
- Ensure Health, Safety, and Environmental standards are implemented across your section
- Identify technical risks and drive engineering solutions early
- Support short-term planning and contribute to programme updates
- Mentor and support junior engineers and engineering trainees
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Proven experience as a Section Engineer or Senior Site Engineer on civil engineering projects
- Strong background in highways infrastructure and structural works
- Demonstrable experience delivering bridge structures, reinforced concrete, or heavy civils elements
- Excellent setting out, surveying, and technical coordination skills
- Strong communication skills with the ability to lead site-based engineering teams
- CSCS card and site Health & Safety induction
- First Aid at Work certification
Desirable
- Direct experience on highway bridges, overbridges, underpasses, or major structures
- Background with a main contractor on large infrastructure schemes
- Temporary Works Supervisor or Coordinator experience
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, GPS, and modern surveying technologies
- Understanding of NEC contracts and early warning processes
