Purpose of the role
As an Electrical Senior Design Engineer, you’ll play a key role within the Engineering Design Team, working closely with Principal Engineers, Design Managers and Discipline Leads to deliver high-quality design in line with processes, BMS requirements and H&S regulations. This is a hands-on technical position requiring strong design capability within the water and wastewater sector, and may also involve line management of discipline and non-discipline engineers. Alongside driving quality and supporting innovation, you’ll contribute to the governance of discipline design activities, ensuring smooth integration with other design disciplines. You’ll provide technical support to procurement and site teams as needed, while also helping the Discipline Manager and Principal Engineers with knowledge sharing, team development and mentoring of early-career engineers.
What will you be doing:
- Provide technical compliance and quality on design outputs, acting as the default checker to ensure technical assurance and quality control.
- Operate as the discipline lead for a project.
- Seek optimal and efficient design solutions that balance both capital and operational cost benefits.
- Assist the Principal Designer Lead in ensuring CDM regulations are met.
- Design with buildability, safe construction and safe operation in mind, working alongside delivery teams.
- Help ensure procedural governance is followed throughout.
- Work within the Design team to ensure schemes meet client specifications and standards.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Health, Safety and Environmental legislation. Promote innovation, value engineering and digital design.
- Provide technical problem-solving across the full project lifecycle, ensuring potential issues are identified, mitigated and managed.
- Support pre-contract design activities.
About You
- Proficient with ETAP for HV/LV modelling, protection studies and system calculations.
- Skilled in AutoCAD/DraftSight.
- Strong at producing electrical installation packs and technical drawings.
- Able to create layouts for switch rooms, cable routes and substations.
- Experienced managing consultants on earthing design.
- Confident assessing suppliers and their design submissions.
- Knowledge of BS7671, C&G 2382-18, NICEIC certification and HV standards.
- Degree-qualified with 7+ years in the water/wastewater sector.
- Preferably Chartered.
- Strong multidisciplinary design understanding and commercial awareness.
- Experienced checking and approving design packages and subcontractor documents.
