Do you have a background in designing mechanical engineered components? And knowledge of sheet metal, extrusion, plastic injection moulding, and electro-mechanical engineering? This could be the role for you! We are on the lookout for a Mechanical Design Engineer to design sheet metal and plastic enclosures, and additional mechanical components, for an electro-mechanical engineering business. You will be utilising processes such as material extrusion, fabrication and casting plus exciting technologies such as injection moulding. Production assistance with the design of jigs/fixtures will also be required from time to time.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have a recognised mechanical engineering qualification and at least three years of design experience in all types of enclosures for a high volume manufacturing business. It would be beneficial for the appointed Mechanical Design Engineer to have experience in industrial/product design and have a flair for the aesthetic. Our client has a full order book for the foreseeable future, featuring some of the biggest names in British engineering.

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Design plastic injection moulded components
  • Design fabricated interlocking aluminium & steel enclosures
  • Carry out mechanical fittings and compatibility checks on electronic assemblies. Produce wiring diagrams and assembly instructions when required
  • Assist the production team with the design of relevant jigs & fixtures, and manage their manufacture
  • Ensure all products are designed with manufacture and assembly considerations
  • Evaluate components from datasheet information and then approve through appropriate testing
  • Build and test initial samples and qualify the design with the correct documentation
  • Provide technical support to Production for day-to-day design, performance and quality issues which arise
Skills and Abilities:
  • Of degree calibre within mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • Familiar with 2D & 3D modelling and design packages
  • Knowledge of metal (castings, sheet metal, extrusions, etc)
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing environment with design for manufacture and test
