Muntons is a leading supplier of malts and malted ingredients to the food and drinks industry worldwide. They have a 45 Acre site, are open 365 days a year, and have a 24/7 manufacturing facility supplying 90+ different countries. Muntons has been producing high-quality malt and malted ingredients for over 100 years.

As part of the Munton Engineering team, you will be responsible for the maintenance and continued efficient & safe running of the Stowmarket site. You will undertake an engineering apprenticeship to ensure sufficient learning and development is achieved, successfully completing an apprenticeship recognised by Muntons.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out a range of electrical and mechanical engineering works, including proactive planned maintenance, small projects, installations, reactive activities, and repairs.
  • Providing a dynamic and proactive response to engineering breakdowns to maximise production and minimise plant downtime.
  • Planning access to perform preventive maintenance tasks as per allocation from the CMMS system.
  • Communicating daily with your mentor/Engineering Team Leader to ensure established priorities are dealt with in a coordinated approach.
  • Participating and updating all taskings from the CMMS system, prioritising tasks, breakdowns, and preventative maintenance.
  • Updating your college workbook, assignments, attending review meetings, and keeping records of work done that meet the framework requirements of the course.
  • Ensuring all safety protocols are adhered to at all times.

General Maintenance activities will include:

  • General day-to-day repairs within skillset and training; working alongside customers and team members to carry out plant modifications and ensure proper maintenance.
  • Participating in all aspects of maintenance work associated with plant shutdowns.
  • Undertaking planned maintenance routines as guided by the Maintenance Manager/Team leader.
  • Managing contractors, including performing inductions and permits with support from your Mentor/Team Leader.

In terms of Plant Hygiene, you will:

  • Ensure all tools and equipment are removed from the food processing areas when completing tasks.
  • Maintain a tidy engineering workshop and good standards of housekeeping.
  • Control spills and adhere to the company policy on hygiene.

For Administration tasks, you will:

  • Respond to internal customer requests, providing updates via email & CMMS system.
  • Keep up to date on tasks and include all information when updating CMMS.
  • Submit accurate descriptions of spare parts requested.
  • Update relevant schedules and tables as required when changes are made.
  • Escalate any problems with your mentor/Team Leader.

In the Electrical domain, you will:

  • Successfully fault find on electrical control and power systems, identifying intermittent faults on processes on site.
  • Understand and modify SCADA systems as required (once training has been completed).
  • Identify reasons for motor overloading, test/change failed motors, and select correct equivalent alternatives if needed to get processes up and running.

Entry requirements: GCSE or equivalent Maths and English (Grade 5-9). A Levels or equivalent qualification.

Skills required: Initiative.

Training to be provided: The learner will be studying the Engineering Maintenance Technician - Dual discipline Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard qualification with day release to West Suffolk College.

Things to consider: There is an element of working at height alongside varied working conditions ranging from dusty, tropical, and noisy. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the role will consist of lone working as well as working within a team. The programme will involve gaining experience and training to develop your knowledge and skills to enable you to take up an Engineering position within the organisation. The Company will endeavour to provide you with such training to achieve this aim but cannot guarantee a permanent placement.
