Seasonal Ecological Assistant

A number of seasonal ecological assistant roles are available commencing in April each year. We are seeking assistants (new to ecology or experienced) to work from our Leeds based office at Carrwood Park, near Garforth and our Bolsover office.

Work Package:
Various contracts available

  • Flexible working;
  • Rates of pay are hourly (commencing at £12.21 p/h) or per survey and subject to experience;
  • Mileage and expenses are paid for field surveys. Accommodation provided for surveys where required;
  • Workplace pension scheme for eligible employees, with employer contributions;
  • Holiday entitlement: paid time off for every hour worked;

You will gain experience in:

  • Undertaking bat surveys (dusk emergence and dawn re-entry surveys, activity transects, static detector surveys);
  • Great crested newt eDNA and aquatic surveys;
  • Training to aid in working towards gaining a great crested newt (GCN) and / or bat class licence;
  • Training to gain CSCS;
  • Working on European Protected Species Licence’s (Bats / GCN);
  • Reptile surveys;
  • Badger surveys;
  • Habitat Assessments;
  • Water vole / Otter / White clawed-crayfish surveys;
  • Undertaking desk studies;
  • QGIS;
  • Training in bat sonogram analysis;
  • Contributing to Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments and other protected species survey reports.

Essential:

  • Able to work flexibly and away from home (including night work) in an outdoor environment;
  • Be prepared to regularly work late evenings and early mornings
  • A degree or similar qualification or training in an environmental (or relevant) subject or working towards this qualification;
  • A full clean driving licence and a vehicle, insured for business use;
  • Have or be eligible for graduate, student or associate membership to CIEEM;
  • Availability from April to October;
  • Working effectively in a team and independently;
  • Committed, reliable, enthusiastic and with a good attention to detail and concentration skills.

Desirable

  • A driving licence and car with business insurance;
  • Prior experience of working under or holding a survey licence for great crested newts, bats, dormice or white-clawed crayfish;
  • CSCS card;
  • Botanical identification skills.
