My client is a specialist precision engineering business established in 1997. They are currently going through an expansion project and moving to a larger premises in Blaydon on Tyne. The business designs and manufactures high-quality, custom components for some of the world’s most demanding industries — from Subsea and Oil & Gas to Defence, Marine, Rail, and Aerospace. Their reputation for excellence is built on quality and craftsmanship.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Welding & Fabrication Cost Estimator to bring their technical expertise and analytical precision to our growing team. You’ll play a pivotal role in preparing detailed cost estimates for high-specification welding and fabrication projects — often involving advanced materials such as S690QL high-strength steels, duplex stainless steels, and Inconel. Your insights will guide everything from planning and distortion control to post-weld processes and quality testing.
What You’ll Do
- Analyse RFQs, technical drawings, and welding specifications to develop accurate cost estimates.
- Evaluate material, process, and quality requirements for complex welding projects.
- Factor in post-weld machining, NDT, and distortion control to create robust project plans.
- Collaborate with Purchasing, Engineering, and Production teams to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Support the Welding Section with technical guidance, weld sequencing, and troubleshooting.
- Maintain compliance with ISO 3834 and related welding quality standards.
- Continuously refine your estimating models to improve accuracy and performance.
About You
- Time-served welder/fabricator or equivalent technical background.
- Strong understanding of MIG, TIG, and FCAW processes.
- Experience with S690QL, duplex, and Inconel materials (desirable).
- Skilled in interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T.
- Knowledge of fabrication processes (cutting, bending, machining) and their impact on welding.
- Familiar with ISO 3834, ASME IX, and AWS D1.1 standards.
- Proficient in ERP/MRP systems and estimating tools.
- Sharp analytical and mathematical skills.
- Detail-focused, collaborative, and clear in communication.
- CSWIP 3.1 would be desirable, but not essential.
