Futureheads are looking for a Software Quality Engineer to join a well-known consultancy on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This role will involve working on both public and private sector projects, sometimes as the sole test engineer, and other times as part of a team. You will be leading by example, championing our approach to quality, and working in an agile environment across a full range of testing types. Collaboration is key—whether with colleagues, clients, or end users—ensuring work meets high standards and follows best practice.
You will need to be in a commutable distance of one of these hubs and there will be a hybrid arrangement - Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, London. You should be adaptable, able to switch between different tools and technologies, and confident in advising on the best approaches. Mentoring junior colleagues and helping others grow will also be part of your role. All work must comply with our internal quality, environmental, and security policies, as well as client standards.
Essential skills and experience:
- Experience as the sole test engineer on a project team.
- Writing, running, and debugging functional automation tests for front-end and APIs, ideally using frameworks like Cucumber BDD or JUnit.
- Tracking and resolving defects, creating user stories, and managing technical tasks from high-level requirements.
- Working with version control tools (e.g., Git) and peer review processes, plus creating test plans, reports, and supporting E2E and UAT testing.
- Familiarity with non-functional testing, CI tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI), and programming principles.
Core consulting skills:
- Strong organisation, attention to detail, and clear communication skills.
- Proactive, able to challenge respectfully, and confident in raising and mitigating risks.
Nice-to-have experience:
- Knowledge of UK government service standards and agile methodology is beneficial but not essential—we will support you to grow in these areas.
Please note: existing or eligible UK Security Clearance is essential.
