The Role

Drawing on traffic management experience, oversee safe and efficient coordination of passengers and vehicles across the Woolwich Ferry terminals. Manage marshalling, safety compliance, and security protocols.

Key Accountabilities

  • Safe and efficient marshalling and direction of passengers and vehicles in the North and South terminal areas for loading and discharge.
  • Advise the ferry captain/mate of terminal capacity issues and take steps to minimise overload.
  • Assist with opening/closing of Flood Defence Gates as required.
  • Perform daily cleaning and clearance duties within terminal areas and access roads.
  • Inspect passengers and vehicles as instructed and report suspicious items.
  • Immediately report accidents, incidents, emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or abandonments.
  • Act as the first point of contact for public complaints and comments.
  • Assist with integration and operation of new traffic control schemes.
  • Ensure terminal areas comply with the WF Security Plan.

Skills

  • Competent in safe loading/unloading operations of a passenger/vehicle ferry.
  • Good verbal skills for customer complaints – essential.
  • Ability to transfer to Deckhand role if required – desired.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy – essential.
  • Proficiency with computer use and body camera operation – essential.
  • Capability to maintain event logs – essential.
  • Calm and level‑headed – essential.

Knowledge

  • Good working knowledge of WF SMS, policies, plans, and SOPs – desired.
  • Knowledge of legislation governing use of landside terminals and security issues – desired.
  • Familiarity with local area for directions to motorists and foot passengers – desired.
  • Awareness of site safety and security procedures – desired.
  • Knowledge of operating service hours, complaints process, and key contacts.

Experience

  • Safe and efficient systematic loading/unloading of passengers and vehicles – desired.
  • Experience of lone working and teamwork – essential.
  • Capability to act with hostile or aggressive customers – essential.
  • Experience of emergency action in landside terminals – essential.
  • Experience of security protocols and WF Security Plan application – desired.

Qualifications

Occupational Health Clearance required. Successful completion of DBS, employment referencing, medical screening, and drug & alcohol tests.
