Day-to-day, your focus will be on assuring engineering activities across TfL’s diverse asset base, keeping vital, innovative and big-budget projects moving. You’ll make sure assets are safe, operable and compliant to TfL’s engineering requirements; identifying issues and supporting their resolution with the project team; and being a trusted source of engineering advice for everyone, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.

We are seeking applications from Construction Inspectors / Clerk of Works with experience on civil engineering schemes to join our team to provide independent site-based construction assurance on behalf of the client. As part of TfL Engineering’s Infrastructure group the Construction Engineering Team is accountable for site supervision across all TfL transport systems. You will be embedded in site-based project teams to supervise the construction works and ensure the safety of the public, site staff and TfL assets whilst ensuring that works are undertaken in accordance with the Works Information to ensure the required quality is achieved, to programme and budget.

Key Accountabilities:

• Provide independent inspection and assurance of construction, maintenance and renewal works across TfL assets
• Undertake risk-based surveillance, inspection, and audit of multidisciplinary civil engineering activities
• Ensure contractor compliance with drawings, specifications, ITPs, and Works Information
• Maintain accurate records of quality and progress to support reporting, assurance, and continuous improvement
• Support project teams by identifying issues, advising on compliance, and contributing to effective resolution
• Ensure works comply with TfL Standards, industry regulations, and statutory requirements
• Identify, manage, and escape risks to assets, operations and safety
• Contribute to defect management, snagging, and handover processes

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of construction inspection principles and compliance with Works Information and statutory regulations, including Building Regulations, CDM Regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act
• Knowledge of risks associated with construction activities and their impact on safety, assets, and the transport system
• Awareness of TfL’s vision, the Mayoral Transport Strategy, business priorities, and financial constraints
• Awareness of interfaces and interdependencies between own discipline and the wider transport system
• Knowledge of relevant industry standards, design codes, and assurance processes
• Holds a minimum of an NVQ level 2 or equivalent in a relevant subject
• Ideally a member of the ICWCI, Technician Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, or an equivalent recognised body

Skills:

• Supervise and independently inspect civil engineering works in a live operational environment
• Interpret and apply contract documentation, including drawings, specifications, RAMS, and ITPs
• Lead inspection and testing activities, including monitoring, verification and close-out
• Identify non-compliance, assess risk, and take appropriate action, including escalation where required
• Maintain accurate site records and produce clear, concise technical site reports
• Communicate effectively with contractors, project teams, and stakeholders to support delivery and assurance outcomes

Experience:

• Experience inspecting and assuring civil engineering works across construction, maintenance, or renewal projects
• Experience working across a range of asset types, such as bridges, structures, tunnels, stations, premises or highways
• Experience monitoring contractor performance and quality compliance on site
• Experience producing technical records, reports, or assurance documentation
• Experience supporting project delivery across asset lifecycle stages, including construction, testing, commissioning and handover
• Experience applying engineering judgment to resolve routine site issues
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and building effective working relationships
