About the role:
Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are at the forefront of delivering and maintaining critical infrastructure that keeps London moving. From legacy asset stewardship to the development of new systems and solutions, this role contributes to connecting communities and supporting the capital’s future. As a Senior Engineer - Railway Structures, you will deliver high-quality structural design and assessment work, alongside providing hands-on technical leadership where required. You will play a key technical role in ensuring assets are safe, reliable, serviceable, and compliant, while contributing expert engineering judgement to unique and complex engineering challenges. You will act as a trusted source of structural engineering advice within your discipline and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders across TfL Engineering, including engagement with senior stakeholders such as Heads of Engineering Delivery.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Knowledge: Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer, or equivalent. Extensive expertise, across whole life cycles, in the design, repairs/refurbishments and/or assessment of railway and transport-related structures, such as bridges, covered ways, buildings, platforms, and access provisions. Knowledge of design and assessment assurance processes to ensure quality and compliance. In-depth understanding of legislation, technical standards, and health, safety and environmental requirements. Sound knowledge of risk management and value engineering principles. Understanding of asset management and risk-based design approaches. Understanding of railway structures interfaces, and historic infrastructure constraints.
- Skills: Strong capability to develop, detail and communicate technical solutions aligned with business needs and whole-life asset performance. Capability in design management, including planning, coordination, review and approval of technical deliverables. Hands-on technical capability, with confidence to undertake detailed design, calculations and problem-solving. Strong technical detailing skills, including the ability to produce, check and review deliverables to ensure high-quality, buildable and compliant structural details. Ability to supervise the delivery and support the professional development of engineers/graduates as required. Competence in selecting appropriate methodologies, undertaking hand calculations and using analysis/design software. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Ability to produce sketches, give clear technical instructions, and oversee CAD productions, ensuring accuracy and quality of detailed design outputs. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
- Experience: Extensive experience in the design, assessment, and construction of structures. TfL/Railway or major infrastructure environment related experience is highly desirable. Experience in the production, and review/approval of detailed design deliverables, including drawings, specifications and construction details. Experience of supporting the delivery of technical assurance activities as well as operating within established technical assurance processes. Demonstrated experience in hands-on technical delivery, including undertaking structural analysis, calculations and detailed design when required. Experience of providing technical advice for site activities, including leading inspections, surveys, and resolving construction and detailing-related issues. Experience in undertaking feasibility studies, optioneering and developing structural solutions independently. Strong record of applying engineering judgement to resolve complex and ambiguous technical challenges. Experience in supporting large programmes, enhancement projects or operational activities. Experience in structural repairs and refurbishment works is desirable. Experience with lift and escalator support structures is desirable.
