Duration: Approximately 2.5 years.

Entry requirements:

  • Hold or be working toward a minimum of 2 GCSEs (or equivalent) A*–C or grade 4 or above, including Maths and English.
  • Not eligible if you currently hold or are working toward a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject, or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.
  • You must be 16 years of age before the start date to be eligible.
  • Your offer will be subject to a satisfactory medical examination, which may include drugs and alcohol screening, eyesight and hearing tests.

Job overview:

The Project Controls team is responsible for monitoring and systematically analysing progress and performance data on a variety of projects and initiatives. Your role will help drive efficiency and ensure that we are delivering value for money while developing expertise in estimating, planning, scheduling and cost engineering.

What will I be doing?

You will gain experience on capital investment projects, asset maintenance and operations. By the end of the scheme you will be skilled in a variety of controls areas that are transferable to a dynamic and rewarding career. As an apprentice, your two‑year development programme will consist of five placement rotations. These will develop your understanding of the different aspects that make up Project Controls as a business function, including Planning, Risk and Commercial, while you study for the ECITB Diploma in Project Controls.

Placement details:

  • Placement 1: Deep Tube Upgrade Programme – 6 months Developing expertise in estimating costs for each element of the project to ensure that it stays within budget and monitoring and analysing progress and performance data to keep the project on track.
  • Placement 3: Major Stations – 6 months Work with the Planner to create a robust and accurate schedule to ensure that the project runs to plan.
  • Placement 4: Asset Performance Directorate – 6 months Support the management of risk to the projects, identifying risks and opportunities.

You will complete four six‑month placements working in a broad range of diverse business areas, including London Underground, Surface Transport, DLR and London Overground. You’ll learn a variety of skills, such as creating robust schedules, estimating project costs, considering risk factors, and using your interpersonal skills to keep the whole team informed and working together.

Upon successful completion of the scheme, you could progress to roles such as:

  • Project Controls Assistant
  • Data Controller

These roles can lead to more senior positions such as:

  • Planner
  • Senior Planner
  • Project Controls Manager

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards the ECITB Diploma in Project Controls and will have opportunities to complete additional training courses. Typically you will have one study day a week, with college sessions approximately once a month for the first 15–18 months. We’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on‑the‑job practical experiences and placements and your professional development through classroom‑led training, online courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking.

Support staff:

  • Placement manager – Responsible for day‑to‑day management and support with your development.
  • Scheme sponsor – A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility.
  • Buddy – Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support and ensures you feel welcomed in the organisation.
  • Development adviser – Supports your professional development through career coaching and progression advice at TfL.

The application process consists of 5 steps, including online assessments that must be completed within an allocated time frame. Please read the accompanying document thoroughly so that you can familiarise yourself with the process. You will receive information and guidance around each assessment stage as you progress through your application. Pay close attention to emails and deadlines – you have one week to complete online assessments and we cannot re‑issue these tests once the deadline passes. Assessment centres for apprentice roles will take place from March to May 2026. Please note that many roles only have one assessment day and we cannot guarantee alternative dates. Assessment centres are conducted in‑person and virtually (role dependent).
