About the role
We’re excited to offer an opportunity for a motivated and experienced planning enforcement officer to join our team. In this role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring compliance with planning regulations, helping to create clarity and fairness across the borough.
Responsibilities
- Manage a varied caseload of enforcement investigations—gather evidence from site visits and recommend proportionate action at each stage.
- Lead complex investigations into planning breaches, working closely with colleagues in Development Management, and other frontline services to deliver joined‑up solutions for residents.
- Collaborate effectively within a supportive team—sharing knowledge and working flexibly across service boundaries to tackle issues such as unauthorised uses and development.
- Apply enforcement tools including stop notices, enforcement notices, breach of condition notices, Section 215 notices, and advertisement controls—monitor compliance and pursue prosecutions where appropriate.
- Handle appeals against the notices you serve—prepare statements, liaise with legal teams, and represent the Council at hearings when required.
- Act as a key contact for residents, stakeholders, ward councillors and businesses—communicating clearly, conducting site visits, and resolving issues with empathy and professionalism.
Qualifications
- Experience in planning and/or planning enforcement, including case management, appeals and legal proceedings.
- A collaborative working style and commitment to development and continuous improvement.
- Working knowledge of planning legislation and enforcement policy.
- Proven ability to work constructively with residents and stakeholders in addressing their planning‑related concerns.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem‑solving skills.
- Good IT skills and the ability to research case law and best practice.
