Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

As a key member of the Publishing and Graphic Design team, your remit will include delivering creative and cost-effective design and editorial solutions for TfL, aligned with our guidelines and our business objectives. You’ll be an internal consultant for all graphic design issues and requirements of TfL. You’ll also be part of the team that oversees the design standards for graphics across TfL, ensuring that they are fit for purpose in order to deliver cost-effective solutions across the organisation.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing expert graphic design services to TfL with an active and creative input to the Publishing and Graphic Design team, acting as an advocate for high-quality design on all assigned projects and ensuring cost-effective solution delivery across TfL.
  • Working with the Publishing Lead, Graphic Design Manager and Production Manager on the production of other graphics materials including digital documents, products, signage and other collateral.
  • Acting as an internal consultant on the technical aspects of graphic design and their application to project delivery, resolving queries and providing clarification to external consultancies to ensure the delivery of work to TfL's high-quality standards.
  • Assessing and addressing project requirements during all stages of a project, from proposal through design and to implementation – capturing and suggesting improvements to design standards as necessary ensuring regular updates and best practice compliance.

  • Good project management skills (Essential)

  • Ability to value and balance design requirements and heritage and/or disability requirements with operational and business needs (Essential)
  • Ability to identify, communicate and resolve conflicting design priorities and objectives to support effective delivery (Essential)
  • Appreciate heritage and/or disability requirements, address and mitigate impact on business and operations (Essential)

Knowledge

  • A degree, or equivalent, in a design/graphic design or suitable professional experience (Essential)
  • A good working knowledge of graphic design methodology and practices (Essential)
  • Knowledge of TfL’s structure and operations to ensure that emergency requests that require, if appropriate, working outside normal office hours are understood and met (Essential)
  • Advanced knowledge in working with various software packages, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat and Microsoft Office (Essential)
  • Knowledge of HTML coding (desirable)

Experience

  • Experience of working with design standards and guidelines to support implementation across a complex business (Essential)
  • Experience of editorial design (Desirable)
  • Experience of working on start to end design projects and working with editors and stakeholders (Essential)
  • Experience of working on projects from initial concept to through to artwork stages (Essential)
  • Experience of creating accessible documents for those using assistive technologies (desirable)
