About us
Future Energy Networks (FEN) represents those in the energy industry seeking to understand and enact the changes needed to deliver the energy networks of the future. FEN’s current members include the owner and operator of the GB gas transmission network, National Gas, and the four Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) – Cadent Gas, Northern Gas Networks, SGN and Wales & West Utilities. Five networks with operations in Northern Ireland – Evolve, Gas Networks Ireland, Kinecx Energy, Mutual Energy and Phoenix Energy – became associate members of FEN in summer 2025. We believe in an equitable and affordable energy transition, with the energy networks playing a fundamental role in enabling this to happen. FEN is leading this change through bringing together industry expertise to build the evidence base in support of decision‑making, while our member companies invest in the infrastructure required to transport low‑carbon energy from producers to consumers.
Job role and responsibilities

The country is on an unprecedented journey to decarbonise our energy system. At FEN, our job is to represent the intrinsic value our gas network can make to that transition and to ensure our members are at the heart of the debate. This is a high‑impact policy role at a critical juncture, where the nation’s decarbonisation imperative is colliding head‑on with affordability and security of supply concerns. Energy has never been more prominent or political than it is today, and FEN is at the very heart of the debate.
- Form a key part of FEN’s Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to the CEO.
- Lead FEN’s Policy and Regulation team, setting the strategic direction of all of our policy and regulatory activities.
- Represent FEN effectively externally, speaking regularly at industry events and maintaining an active presence with key policy stakeholders, including Ofgem, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, HM Treasury and the National Energy System Operator.
- Actively engage with and influence the policy development processes of government and other stakeholders, both before and during formal consultation windows.
- Build relationships and alliances across the ‘energy ecosystem’, particularly with a view to aligning on shared policy positions with key stakeholders.
- Lead the management and delivery of FEN’s responses to policy consultations, parliamentary inquiries and other formal engagement opportunities.
- Be comfortable and extremely effective engaging at a senior level in the industry, with Director Generals, Ministers, CEOs and similar.
- Take intellectual ownership for the development of FEN’s policy positions for our members, bringing your expertise in energy policy to shape this.
- Lend your knowledge of the energy system and energy policy to FEN’s initiatives which span beyond policy, such as our work with the Green Gas Taskforce.
- Produce high‑quality written materials, including policy briefs, consultation responses, and position papers.
- Lead FEN’s relationship management and influencing on all areas of policy, building strong working relationships with key policy and sector stakeholders to maximise the voice of the industry and amplify our messaging.
- Lead FEN’s regulatory interactions with Ofgem and other regulators.
- Manage the Gas Policy Group, an industry group with key policy leads from our member companies.
Who you are
The role is ideal for someone who wants to be at the forefront of influencing British energy policy. We are looking for someone who wants to be a vocal and visible leader in the energy sector and who will enthusiastically embrace all of the opportunities which will be offered to the right candidate for this role. That could include attending senior government councils, speaking in Parliament, giving evidence at Select Committees, media opportunities – the opportunities for the right candidate are endless. Above all, you will be motivated and passionate about the role of gas in the energy system of today and of tomorrow. You thrive when you are using your expertise to engage and influence the direction of something of strategic national importance. And you will have an in‑depth knowledge of the UK energy system, the role of gas within it and the UK energy policy landscape.
What you bring
- A degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience.
- A strong career history in GB energy policy, ideally with some experience in policy on the future of gas.
- Exceptional coordination, project management and people management skills.
- A proven ability to lead and develop small teams.
- Capability to take complete ownership of the direction of a significant part of an organisation’s business plan.
- A passion for the role of gas and green gases in supporting both the low carbon transition and delivery of secure, affordable energy for customers today.
- The ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form, turning complex topics into clear messages which resonate.
What we offer
- Full‑time, permanent contract in London with hybrid working (minimum 2 days per week in the office).
- Salary £75,000 - £100,000, depending on experience.
