Senior / Principal Transport Planner Job reference: FUS-0125 Location: Basingstoke Salary: To be confirmed Employment: Permanent Hours: Full time; exact hours to be confirmed Working arrangement: Basingstoke-based; hybrid and flexible working The client FUSION is recruiting Senior and Principal Transport Planners for a well-established independent transport planning consultancy in Basingstoke. The business advises developers, planning consultants and public-sector bodies on development and infrastructure projects across the UK. The consultancy supports projects from early feasibility and site appraisal through planning, consent and delivery. Its work includes transport assessments, travel planning, preliminary design, sustainable transport strategy and support through the planning process. The role This opportunity can be considered at either Senior or Principal level, depending on experience. Both appointments will take ownership of development-related transport planning projects, deliver high-quality technical work and build strong client and stakeholder relationships. At Senior level, the role combines hands-on technical delivery with increasing responsibility for project management, client engagement and the development of junior colleagues. At Principal level, it includes broader technical leadership, responsibility for complex commissions, project resources and budgets, and a stronger contribution to business development and team leadership. Key responsibilities Lead the preparation and review of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Environmental Statements and related technical documents. Provide transport planning input to site promotion, masterplanning, feasibility work and sustainable transport strategies. Develop practical, evidence-led transport strategies and interpret modelling, traffic data and technical analysis. Act as a key point of contact for clients and work closely with multidisciplinary project teams. Engage with local authorities and other stakeholders, supporting consultation and technical negotiations. Review technical work and maintain a high standard of quality across project deliverables. Support, mentor and develop junior and mid-level colleagues. Contribute to fee proposals, bids and wider business-development activity. Project delivery Manage projects from early feasibility and planning strategy through submission and post-submission stages. Plan and control project programmes, budgets, resources and quality requirements. Coordinate modelling, data analysis and technical inputs so that advice is clear, proportionate and commercially practical. Build trusted client relationships and provide clear advice on development-related transport matters. At Principal level, lead more complex commissions and help guide team delivery and practice growth. Required experience Relevant professional experience in UK development-related transport planning. A good working knowledge of UK planning policy, transport policy and development-planning principles. Experience preparing and reviewing transport-planning reports and supporting technical information. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret transport data and modelling outputs. Project-management experience, including responsibility for programme, budget and quality appropriate to the level of appointment. Confident written and verbal communication, with experience working directly with clients and stakeholders. An existing right to work in the UK without employer sponsorship; the client is unable to offer visa sponsorship. Desirable experience Experience contributing to site promotion, masterplanning and sustainable transport strategies. Experience with transport-modelling tools and data analysis. Experience mentoring and reviewing the work of less experienced transport planners. Experience preparing fee proposals, bids or contributing to business development.
