Role Overview: Responsible for developing and influencing the safety, security and environmental regulation for future fusion power plants. The role requires eligibility for Security Clearance (SC), including DBS checks and possibly an open‑source data search. Onsite working is expected for three days a week, with flexible working arrangements available. The position can be based at UKAEA Culham, Oxfordshire.
The Fusion Safety Advisory team is tasked with creating the future safety, security and environmental regulatory framework for fusion power plants to ensure it is proportionate to the risk of fusion compared to fission. This role provides technical leadership and manages activities related to fusion safety, security and environmental regulation domestically and internationally.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead fusion safety regulation programme activities and provide team management when required.
- Lead several key domestic and international stakeholder relationships to influence and support harmonisation of fusion safety regulation.
- Provide expert fusion safety, security and environmental input into strategic and technical documentation supporting the development of national and international regulatory frameworks.
- Elicit and provide input to IAEA documents on the Fusion Regulatory Framework and Safety Assessment, and potentially new Standards for fusion.
- Present influential work at domestic and international conferences and seminars.
- Lead technical input/review of documentation to provide guidance and standards for the production of safety, security and environmental cases for the fusion industry.
- Post‑graduate qualification in an engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant qualifications and/or experience.
- Extensive experience in the production of nuclear or high‑hazard safety cases and the assessment of radiological safety, environmental and waste hazards, or COMAH safety reporting.
- Deep knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act, Environmental Permitting Regulations and other regulations/guidance relevant to nuclear, radiological and high‑hazard health, safety and security.
- Participation in regulatory interactions at a technical or strategic level.
- Led or coordinated input to national and/or international industry workgroups on processes for developing safety, security, environment cases.
- Ability to communicate technical information to a non‑specialist audience.
- Experience modelling radionuclides to estimate dose to public and environment.
