Location: Culham, Oxfordshire. Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week, with the possibility of increasing to 5 days depending on project needs. Flexible working arrangements are supported.
Overview
This role is part of the UKAEA Electrical Engineering Department and focuses on guiding major high‑voltage network projects. You will shape the future of fusion energy by defining, leading, and delivering large‑scale initiatives ranging from enhancement programmes to next‑generation fusion devices and high‑power computing infrastructure. You will also mentor project teams and set the technical course in your discipline.
Key Accountabilities
- Design, build, commission and test major LV/HV networks, and carry out studies such as power flow, protection and system commissioning.
- Lead significant work packages, act as Project Engineer (and occasionally Project Manager), and ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice and CDM.
- Manage delivery of assigned projects, controlling budgets, meeting milestones and producing required technical documentation.
- Provide high‑voltage consultancy (either 11kV, 33kV, 132kV or 400kV), operate LV/HV switchgear, and apply national network policies, including HV/LV metering requirements.
- Prepare engineering procedures, risk assessments and method statements, while supervising multidisciplinary teams and contractors supporting UKAEA operations.
Qualifications
- A relevant electrical engineering degree or equivalent.
- Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution or actively working towards this.
- Competent in the use of analysis software such as ETAP to support design studies at a HV network level.
- Good communication and technical writing skills.
- Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
- Experience in HV voltage at either of the levels 11kV, 33kV, 132kV and 400kV.
- Capability of using first engineering principles.
- Experience of bespoke HV earthing calculation and installation.
- Experience leading teams and supervising other staff.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
