The role

We are looking for an experienced Staff Engineer with an excellent track record of technical leadership for our Product Engineering team. The role sits within our Short Term Credit Engineering Group and leads the team responsible for the cutting‑edge platform our customers use to apply and manage their credit products. Staff Engineers are among the most senior leaders within our Technology function and are responsible for raising the bar and enabling us to achieve the incredible.

  • Collaborate with product leadership early to understand business goals and shape the technical direction.
  • Translate goals into a target system and data architecture with clear milestones.
  • Write clear and thorough technical designs and standards.
  • Maintain high standards, drive continuous improvement, and inspire others to elevate their work.
  • Identify and leverage generative AI tools and techniques to drive innovation and transform engineering processes.
  • Coach Lead Engineers, provide feedback, and support their personal development as a role model for aspiring Staff Engineers.
  • Perform deep‑dives and troubleshoot issues hands‑on, while enabling teams rather than becoming a dependency.
  • Manage stakeholders and present technology solutions, risks, and trade‑offs to any audience across Funding Circle, influencing without direct authority.
  • Take accountability for high‑level solution design and technology decisions within the Group.
  • Apply sound commercial acumen and understand how technology drives top and bottom line outcomes.
  • Represent Funding Circle externally at events, sharing industry trends and attracting talent.

What we’re looking for

  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in at least one major programming language (e.g., Python, Ruby, Java).

  • Familiarity with Unix/Linux development environments.
  • Knowledgeable of Agile, Scrum, BDD, TDD, and CI/CD.
  • Experience delivering mission‑critical, high‑value products and services.
  • A passion for adopting and applying emerging technologies, particularly generative AI, to solve complex engineering challenges and drive transformation.
