Job Overview
A Band 6 midwife is responsible for their own practice and therefore the post holder will be expected to maintain a high standard of professional expertise and to ensure that the highest quality of midwifery care is given during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. This care will be evidenced based and holistic in meeting the needs of women/people in a variety of practice settings. Provide professional leadership and mentoring to less experienced midwives and support to colleagues in a multidisciplinary team. Provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to a defined group of women/people, babies and their families in the community and hospital setting. In the absence of a Band 7 team leader, lead the team and manage the workload either in the community or unit. Co-operate and liaise with all members of staff, the Primary health care team, the medical and midwifery staff in the unit to endeavour to foster team spirit and ensure continuity of care. Evaluates and plans programmes of care for women, babies and their families within the community and hospital setting. Plans own workload on a day-to-day basis and delegates appropriately. Acts as a mentor and participate in preceptorship programmes. Skilled in communicating with a range of people on a daily basis some of who may have communication barriers. As part of the role you will be expected to participate in a rotational programme in all core and community areas.
Main duties of the job
- Co-operate and liaise with all members of staff, the Primary health care team, the medical and midwifery staff in the hospital and community setting to endeavour to foster team spirit and ensure the highest standard of care to the women/pregnant people and families accessing our service
- Promote continuity of care to provide a high standard of midwifery care to mother and baby and to provide help and support to the family unit
- Actively promote the concept of total holistic woman/person centered care within the maternity services offering choice regarding place of birth
- Provide information to the expectant mothers/people to enable them to make an informed choice about the place and mode of delivery and services available
- Assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care for mothers/people and babies in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods to ensure practice is evidence-based
- Participate in providing an on-call service for the core and community dependent on base location; with Team Coordinator, identify and organise plans of care for women and families of concern, e.g. child protection and mental health issues; assist in maintaining an effective communication network (written, verbal and electronic), informing senior staff of matters outside your role/sphere of competence, and cascading information to more junior staff
- Develops and maintain communication with people about difficult matters or difficult situations, in an appropriate, supportive and empathic manner
- Act as shift co-ordinator; escalate according to policy ensuring the appropriate delegation of care and workload, and ensuring the team performs to high standards of care with effective patient flow
- With community team Coordinator, identify and organise plans of care for women/people and families of concern, e.g. child protection and mental health issues
