To participate in symptomatic and assessment clinics at the static unit and in screening mammography at both the static and mobile units.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for own clinical work and professional development, support service development and help improve/maintain the quality of the service through quality assurance programmes and departmental audit.
  • Support clinical governance and work as part of a team with other disciplines towards shared objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Clinical
    • To undertake screening/other mammography in line with national and local protocols at either the static unit or mobile unit as arranged.
    • Assist in interventional procedures – core biopsies, localisations etc. as required, including preparation of procedure trolley and support of patients undergoing procedure.
    • To process images and prepare for clinical reporting.
    • To ensure safe use of imaging and other equipment used in the department.
  • Professional
    • To maintain and promote a high standard of clinical practice and patient care; to maintain good and effective professional practices; to ensure consistent operation of policies and standards.
    • To work in accordance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations, Health and Safety legislation and all Trust policies and procedures.
    • To work in full compliance with the national and local directives for breast screening.
    • To promote the NHS Breast Screening Programme, providing information and support to clients/patients.
    • To keep up to date with new developments, equipment and working practices in breast imaging.
    • To feedback information from training courses attended.
    • To attend staff and team meetings as appropriate.
    • To participate in staff development and training programmes.
    • To be appraised annually and to strive to meet agreed personal and service objectives.
    • To be responsible for own active engagement in continual professional development on a regular basis and to maintain a portfolio of evidence.
    • To have a professional and courteous manner and always uphold the reputation of the Breast Unit; to observe confidentiality with respect to Trust, patient, staff and NHS information at all times.
  • Operational
    • To supervise the more junior radiographic staff and student radiographers and liaise with other radiographers, radiologists, nurses, technical, clerical and other relevant staff within and outside the department.
    • Pro‐actively support and participate within a multi‐disciplinary team to ensure an effective, efficient delivery of service in order to maintain departmental quality standards.
    • To be actively involved with induction and teaching of new staff.
    • To have technical expertise of equipment used to ensure its safe and proper use and to identify any malfunction and act appropriately.
    • To support current and future normal working hours and shifts required for the provision of breast screening services.
    • To work within the framework of the Breast Imaging Centre and Radiological Sciences Directorate services, strategies and plans.
    • To undertake other duties not specified here but within the general scope and grade of the post, which may be delegated from time to time by the Breast Imaging Services Manager and/or Lead Clinician.
  • Quality
    • To take an active part in carrying out Quality Assurance Programmes in line with departmental strategy covering all aspects of quality to ensure the highest standards are set, monitored and maintained, keeping such records as are required.
    • To participate in the audit of services undertaken within the department as an individual and as part of a team. To ensure the outcomes of audit and information are acted upon appropriately.
    • To routinely produce high quality images and participate regularly in the Image Review system and peer review of technical recalls.
  • Risk Management
    • The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.
    • Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.
    • Please be aware that mammography involves adopting a number of uncomfortable postures/positions repeatedly throughout the day which can cause stresses on the upper limbs, body and surrounding soft tissues.
    • Staff should be familiar with Major Incident Policy and Fire Policy and should make themselves familiar with the local response plan and their role within it.
  • Health and Safety
    • The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust policies and procedures.
    • Participate in the departmental Health and Safety programme for the safe working for self and others; actively co‐operate with managers for management of health and safety.
    • Ensure Radiation, Health & Safety and COSHH regulations and codes of practice are adhered to and relevant records kept; assist in maintaining and updating the data in relevant sections of the COSHH file, e.g. by advising the CSU Manager of changes in product used.
  • Infection Control
    • Infection Control is everyone's responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non‐clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust's Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times, thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
    • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
    • Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
    • Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
  • Child Protection
    • The post holder will endeavour at all times to uphold the rights of children and young people in accordance with the UN Convention Rights of the Child.
  • Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults
    • The Trust is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults throughout the organisation. As a member of the Trust there is a duty to assist in protecting patients and their families from any form of harm when they are vulnerable.
  • Information Governance
    • All staff must complete annual information governance training.
  • Data Quality
    • Data quality is a vital element of every member of staff's job role. The Oxford University Hospitals recognises the importance of information in the provision of patient care and in reporting on its performance. Data quality is therefore crucial in ensuring complete, timely and accurate information is available in support of patient care, clinical governance, performance management, service planning and financial and resource planning and performance.

Person Specification

  • Essential
    • BSc. Radiography or Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent.
    • Post‐graduate certificate in mammography.
    • Current HPC registration.
    • Evidence of CPD.
  • Desirable
    • Experience in breast screening/symptomatic services.
  • Essential Experience
    • Experience as a radiographer within breast screening and symptomatic services.
    • Knowledge of a breast screening programme.
  • Desirable Experience
    • Experience in breast screening on mobile or static unit.
    • Knowledge of NHSBSP guidelines for the practice of mammography.
    • Experience of QA procedure and processes.
