Main duties of the job:

  • Manage the Emergency Department and the team as a whole.
  • Assess, investigate and treat patients presenting to the ED and make appropriate decisions regarding referral or discharge in a timely manner.
  • Resuscitate, diagnose and initiate treatment of all emergencies.
  • Lead the trauma and cardiac arrest teams.
  • Work in all areas of the ED (Majors, Minors, Paeds ED, Resus, RAT).
  • Assist, train and supervise ST/GP-VTS/FY2 trainees, Trust doctors, ENPs and ANPs in Emergency Medicine; report concerns to the Duty Consultant.
  • Liaise with the nursing shift manager and other nursing staff to organise the allocation of work and ensure smooth running of the department.
  • Assist in ensuring optimal record keeping and discharge summaries to guarantee continuity of care.
  • Contribute to departmental teaching, audits and quality improvement projects.
  • Participate in safeguarding requirements for adults and children; fulfil the statutory and mandatory training programme as per the Trust policy.
  • Uphold confidentiality of all patient records and Trust information.

Job Description — Main responsibilities:

The post is for 11 sessions per week. One session per week is allocated to supporting professional activities (SPA). Based on educational needs and progression, the post holder may have the opportunity to enrol onto the CESR Fellowship Programme in Emergency Medicine, which may include time away from ED to gain experience in other acute specialties. The programme aims to develop competencies for CESR and entry to the Specialist Register. The work pattern includes a 21-week rolling rota with 1 in 3 weekends and includes out-of-hours and night shifts. Four shifts are used: 0800-1600, 1300-2200, 1600-0000, and 2200-0815 hrs. Average weekly hours are ~40 across the rota, with possible extra hours in emergencies or major incidents.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent; MRCEM or FRCEM Primary; Full GMC registration and current licence to practise.

Experience: Post-qualification experience including within Emergency Medicine.

Desirable: FRCEM or equivalent MRCP, MRCS. Previous NHS experience; experience in Paediatrics, Acute Medicine, ITU, Anaesthesia; Registrar level experience in Emergency Medicine.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act; a Disclosure to the DBS will be required.
