We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Anaesthetics to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff. We are a department that provides a consultant-led service to dynamic surgical teams seeking to lead surgical innovation. Our department prides itself in allowing each individual to develop and bring their own areas of expertise and interest to what is already a very diverse mix of special interests.
Main duties of the job include:
- Providing expert clinical care in Anaesthetics, including elective theatre lists, emergencies, outpatient clinics for high risk anaesthetic clinics, and on-call services.
- Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions in hospital and community settings.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of integrated clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Supervising and supporting resident medical staff.
- Engaging in clinical audit, quality improvement, and research activities.
- Participating in clinical governance and risk management.
- Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Collaborating with colleagues across departments and external partners.
Teaching and training responsibilities include:
- Providing teaching and mentorship to medical students, resident doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
- Participating in postgraduate education and training programmes.
Research and innovation responsibilities include:
- Supporting or leading research within the department.
- Contributing to publications and presentations at professional conferences.
Management and leadership responsibilities include:
- Participating in departmental meetings and service planning.
- Contributing to workforce planning and service redesign initiatives.
- Taking on leadership roles as appropriate within the department or Trust.
Essential qualifications include:
- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- FRCA or equivalent.
- CCT (or equivalent) in relevant specialty or within 6 months of achieving.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Subspecialty training in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
- Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) or additional postgraduate qualifications ideally in Perioperative medicine or equivalent.
- Formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert in Medical Education).
Experience required includes:
- Broad and relevant clinical experience in the specialty.
- Experience in teaching and supervising resident doctors and medical students.
- Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
- Experience in High-Risk Anaesthetic Clinic for Paediatrics.
- Completion of an SIA or equivalent in peri-operative medicine.
Desirable experience includes:
- Experience in service development or redesign.
- Advanced training in anaesthesia for Obstetrics and Regional Anaesthesia.
- ALS or EPALS Instructor.
- Experience in curriculum development or educational leadership.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals; involvement in clinical research or trials.
- Previous experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare system.
