Permanent, up to 37.5 hours per week; Pay Point 13 per hour.
Role Purpose
The Phlebotomist and General Practice Assistant performs venepuncture and blood specimen collection to clinical standards, supports wider clinical workflow under the direction of registered clinical staff, and assists with general practice duties such as preparing clinical rooms and chaperoning.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venepuncture for blood specimen collection on adult patients, ensuring patient comfort and consent.
- Accurately label, package, and process blood samples for laboratory transport in line with cold chain and transport protocols.
- Document procedures and any complications accurately in SystmOne.
- Maintain aseptic technique and infection control during all phlebotomy procedures.
- Prepare clinical rooms including stock, equipment and cleanliness for nursing and medical clinics.
- Provide chaperoning for clinical examinations as requested by clinicians.
- Support basic clinical observations under the direction of registered clinical staff.
- Manage clinical supply stock including checking, reordering and restocking as required.
- Carry out daily fridge temperature monitoring and recording in line with cold chain policy.
- Carry out scheduled equipment checks including resuscitation trolley, ECG and sphygmomanometers.
- Provide a calm, professional and reassuring experience for patients, particularly anxious or needle‑phobic.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality.
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols including PPE and hand hygiene.
- Report and contribute to learning from any clinical or near‑miss incidents.
- Support clinical audit relating to phlebotomy quality and turnaround.
Qualifications
- Core GCSEs including English and Maths at grade C/4 or above.
- Recognised phlebotomy training (e.g. NHS phlebotomy course City & Guilds or equivalent with certificate of competence).
- Paediatric phlebotomy competence.
- GPA‑specific training (RCGP General Practice Assistant programme).
- Healthcare Assistant Level 2/3 background.
Experience
- Demonstrable phlebotomy experience in a clinical setting (NHS hospital community).
- Working knowledge of SystmOne (training provided where needed).
- Familiarity with infection control and cold chain principles.
- Personal attributes: Calm, patient, and professional manner with anxious or vulnerable patients; strong attention to detail; reliable and punctual.
