Health and Safety Advisor Location: Midlands / South Midlands / M4–M5 Corridor Job Type: Permanent Working Arrangement: Hybrid - Home, Office (approx 1 day per week) and Site Based We are recruiting for a Health and Safety Advisor to join an established engineering business delivering projects across the UK water and wastewater industry. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Health and Safety Advisor or HSE Advisor who enjoys working closely with operational teams, providing practical advice and helping to promote a positive safety culture across engineering and construction projects. The position offers a varied working pattern combining home working, attendance at the London office (typically one day per week) and visits to operational sites across the UK (normally around two days per week, depending on project requirements). The successful candidate will be approachable, proactive and confident engaging with employees, contractors and senior management, with the ability to provide constructive guidance and influence safe working practices. The Role As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, engineers and subcontractors to support safe and environmentally responsible project delivery. Key responsibilities will include: * Undertaking regular site health, safety and environmental inspections, audits and behavioural observations. * Providing practical HSE advice and guidance to operational and project teams. * Reviewing risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), permits to work and safe systems of work. * Identifying hazards, assessing risks and supporting the implementation of appropriate control measures. * Preparing clear and concise site inspection reports, identifying actions, responsibilities and opportunities for improvement. * Supporting investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental events. * Coaching and mentoring employees and managers to improve safety awareness and behaviours. * Promoting environmental compliance, awareness and good practice across operational sites. * Delivering or supporting toolbox talks, safety briefings and continuous improvement initiatives. * Challenging unsafe practices constructively and intervening where necessary to prevent harm. * Supporting the development and implementation of HSE policies, procedures and standards. * Building effective working relationships with clients, contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders. Ideally You'll Have * Previous experience as a Health and Safety Advisor, HSE Advisor or SHEQ Advisor within engineering, construction, utilities, water, infrastructure or a similar site-based industry. * A NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent recognised health and safety qualification. * A recognised environmental qualification. * Good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and practical risk management. * Experience undertaking site inspections, audits and producing clear, action-focused reports. * Experience reviewing RAMS, site controls and safe systems of work. * An understanding of environmental responsibilities and good practice on operational sites. * Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to challenge and influence at all levels. * A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach to health and safety rather than a purely compliance-led mindset. * A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to sites. Location and Working Arrangements The ideal Health and Safety Advisor will be based in the Midlands, South Midlands or along the M4/M5 corridor, allowing convenient access to projects throughout the UK. The typical working pattern will involve approximately one day per week at the London office, two days visiting project sites and the remaining time working remotely, subject to business requirements. The Opportunity This is an opportunity for a Health and Safety Advisor who wants to make a genuine difference to safety culture and work closely with operational teams across a growing and technically interesting engineering environment. The business is looking for someone who can combine strong professional standards with a collaborative, practical and approachable working style.
