Fulcrum Recruitment is working with an established North East contractor that is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor or Managing Quantity Surveyor to strengthen its Civil Engineering Division. This is a permanent opportunity for a commercially strong civil engineering professional who enjoys being close to live projects, understands the realities of site delivery and can take ownership of the commercial function across multiple schemes or major civils packages.

The role can be based from either the company’s Teesside or Newcastle office, depending on the successful candidate’s location and personal circumstances, with travel to sites across the North East as required. The business has a strong regional workload, with a significant amount of secured work through long-term frameworks and repeat clients. This is a good opportunity for someone looking for stability, responsibility and genuine progression into a more senior commercial role.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor / Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the full commercial lifecycle of civil engineering projects and packages, working in an NEC contract environment and closely supporting operational delivery. Depending on experience, you may be commercially responsible for one larger scheme or a portfolio of smaller works. At Managing Quantity Surveyor level, the role will also involve supporting, mentoring and influencing the wider commercial team as the division continues to grow. The project workload is varied and can include civil engineering, groundworks, infrastructure and public sector-related schemes, including works connected to commercial, industrial, education, healthcare and framework-led projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of civil engineering projects, including NEC contract administration, early warnings, compensation events, assessments, change control, valuations, applications for payment and final accounts.
  • Produce and manage accurate CVRs, forecasts, cost-to-complete reports and commercial updates, ensuring risks and opportunities are identified early.
  • Manage subcontract procurement, subcontractor accounts, payments and commercial governance to support fair and robust outcomes.
  • Work closely with operational teams to align commercial strategy with programme, delivery, margin, cashflow and project performance.
  • Maintain strong project records, protect contractual entitlement and support the business with client reporting and commercial discipline.
  • At Managing Quantity Surveyor level, take responsibility for a wider portfolio of work while supporting the development of junior commercial staff and improving commercial standards across the team.

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven Quantity Surveying experience within main contractor civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks or heavy civils.
  • Strong hands-on NEC3 or NEC4 contract experience, including change management, compensation events and protecting commercial entitlement.
  • Track record of commercially managing projects from start to finish, or leading substantial civils packages within larger schemes.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to work with clients, operational teams, subcontractors and senior stakeholders.
  • Practical, delivery-focused approach with a clear understanding of what good commercial management looks like on live construction projects.
  • For Managing Quantity Surveyor level, previous experience leading, mentoring or influencing commercial teams across multiple workstreams would be beneficial.

Working Pattern and Location

The role can be based from either the Teesside or Newcastle office, depending on what best suits the successful candidate. Regular site visits across the North East will be required, but the company can offer flexibility around office base to suit location and circumstances. A typical working week is 39 hours, with site teams generally operating Monday to Friday, although this may vary depending on project needs. The business values structure, accountability and a professional approach, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between commercial and operational teams.

The Opportunity

This is a secure, long-term opportunity within a busy civil engineering division offering a strong regional workload, varied project exposure and a clear route to progress into a more senior commercial position. The role would suit either a Senior Quantity Surveyor ready to step up, or an existing Managing Quantity Surveyor looking for a stronger pipeline, greater influence and a genuine career path.

Package

The package includes a competitive salary, wider company benefits and long-term career development. The successful candidate will join a commercially mature environment where NEC knowledge is valued and properly used, with exposure to different clients, contract types and project values.

All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Your details will not be shared with any company until the opportunity has been discussed with you in more detail and you are happy to proceed.
