The company operates across the North East, with schemes typically running between Berwick and Northallerton, and a strong concentration of work across Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Teesside. The role can offer a flexible working pattern across office, site and home working, depending on project requirements and the successful candidate’s location.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will support the financial and commercial management of civil engineering projects, ensuring strong cost control, accurate reporting, robust contract administration and successful project outcomes. You will be involved in measurement, valuations, payment applications, final accounts, subcontract procurement, change control, forecasting and commercial reporting. At Senior Quantity Surveyor level, the role may also involve mentoring and supporting other members of the commercial team, helping to drive standards and support team development.

Project Types

Projects can include new highways, road adaptations, reinforced concrete structures, drainage schemes, public realm works and wider design-and-build civil engineering projects. Individual project values can range from smaller schemes through to major projects of up to £55m, with the contractor delivering work across a variety of civil engineering frameworks and contract environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit interim payment applications, valuations and project final accounts.
  • Work with NEC3 / NEC4 contracts and other standard civil engineering forms of contract.
  • Raise early warnings, manage risk reduction and support robust contract administration.
  • Notify, assess and submit quotations for compensation events and change-related matters.
  • Produce project financial forecasts, reports, CVRs and commercial updates in line with reporting timetables.
  • Lead or support subcontract procurement, subcontract management, payments and final account agreements.
  • Work closely with project teams to ensure accurate site records, measurements and commercial documentation are maintained.
  • Attend client, stakeholder and project meetings as required, supporting clear communication and strong commercial control.
  • Mentor and support Quantity Surveying colleagues where required, helping the wider commercial team achieve its objectives.

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, infrastructure or a main contractor environment.
  • Strong commercial experience, ideally with 5–10+ years’ experience across civil engineering projects.
  • Good understanding of NEC contracts, commercial reporting, valuations, change control, subcontract management and final accounts.
  • HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, procedures, contract documentation and project commercial controls.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and standard commercial reporting tools.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to regional sites when required.

The Opportunity

This is a strong long-term opportunity with a major civil engineering contractor offering secure regional work, varied project exposure and genuine scope for career development. The role would suit either an experienced Quantity Surveyor looking to take the next step, or a Senior Quantity Surveyor seeking a stable regional contractor with a strong pipeline and high-quality civil engineering workload. You will be joining a supportive commercial team within a business that values professionalism, accuracy, sound judgement and collaborative working.

Package

The package includes a competitive salary, company benefits and long-term career development.
