Well, here at Fujitsu Research of Europe (FRE), we are combining research and industrial innovation to transform businesses and society. FRE is a multidisciplinary center which, as part of Fujitsu’s global R&D activity, conducts research and innovation – achieving together whilst supporting our employees.

We are looking for an AI Researcher who will join an applied research team focused on using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence methodologies to address real‑world challenges. Your role will involve:

  • Identifying, adapting, and extending cutting‑edge research to meet internal project needs, while designing and validating novel agentic AI methodologies.
  • Leading and contributing to high‑impact research activities, including scientific publications, patent applications, and technological demonstrations, with a clear to applied outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, review, and critically assess state‑of‑the‑art (SOTA) research relevant to internal research and innovation objectives.
  • Design, develop, and evaluate novel AI methodologies, models, and algorithms beyond existing approaches.
  • Adapt academic research into practical solutions for applied research projects and technological demonstrations.
  • Conduct rigorous experimental research, including benchmark design, ablation studies, and method comparison.
  • Author and co‑author research papers, technical reports, and patent applications.
  • Collaborate closely with the research team to translate research results into proof‑of‑concepts and demonstrators.
  • Ensure high research quality through reproducibility and documentation.

Required Skills

  • PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research background in AI/ML, particularly in LLM or agentic AI, with either publications, preprints, or patents.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, with experience in research‑oriented code development and version control (git).
  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Strong foundation in experimental design, statistical analysis, and model evaluation.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex research ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Nice to Have

  • Research experience in areas such as large language models (e.g., training, fine‑tuning, RAG, evaluation, synthetic data generation), agentic AI, big data technologies, or digital twins.
  • Familiarity with emerging research and tooling ecosystems such as LangChain, LangGraph, SmolAgents, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with large‑scale or distributed training frameworks and ecosystems (e.g., HuggingFace, Megatron‑LM, OpenCode).

Your role will be based in Slough, UK. This role will be for a fixed term of 1 year to cover maternity. You will report into both the local Group Manager in FRE and the Project Director in our Laboratories in Japan.
