We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Year in Industry Placement Student to join Fugro’s Geotechnical team in Wallingford, starting August 2025. This opportunity is open to 2nd‑year undergraduate students studying an Earth Science‑related or civil engineering degree, who are looking to complete a 12‑month industrial placement. The Geotechnical Engineering Placement Student will work alongside experienced engineers and geologists, supporting field and office‑based geotechnical activities. This is a developmental role designed to provide practical, hands‑on experience across a wide range of geotechnical engineering tasks and does not carry commercial or project accountability. The placement offers exposure to real engineering projects, combining field investigations, data processing and technical reporting while ensuring alignment with Fugro’s quality, health, safety, security and environmental (QHSSE) standards. Throughout the placement, you will be supported and mentored by experienced professionals to guide your technical and professional development.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
- Assist engineers and geologists with field investigations, including soil descriptions, basic soil testing and in‑situ testing processing
- Support the preparation of technical reports both on site and in the office
- Carry out data entry, data processing and production of figures and plates for reports
- Process and analyse geotechnical data, including basic error checking and corrections
- Maintain accurate survey logs and project records
- Perform quality control and quality assurance checks on collated data prior to delivery
- Support low to medium complexity project activities under supervision
- Identify opportunities for process improvement within workflows
- Contribute ideas for improving existing data processing or reporting methods
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across engineering, laboratory, project management, QHSSE and commercial teams
- Adhere to Fugro QHSSE policies and safe ways of working at all times
What You’ll Need to Thrive in This Role:
- Currently studying towards an Earth Science-related degree, such as Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or a similar discipline, such as civil engineering
- A genuine interest in geotechnical engineering and ground investigation work
- Strong attention to detail and an analytical, methodical approach to problem-solving
- Willingness to learn and take guidance from experienced engineers and geologists
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in working with data, reports and technical documentation
- Enthusiasm for gaining hands-on experience using industry-leading technology and systems
