Location: Cottage Beck Road Depot, Scunthorpe, DN16 1TS
Hours: 37 per week | Tuesday to Friday, 06:45 – 16:15
Pay: £14.13 per hour
Contract: Temporary | 15th September – 30th November
About the Role
We are currently recruiting for a Waste Operative Driver (HGV Class 2) on behalf of our client in Scunthorpe. This is an excellent opportunity to support the local community by safely and efficiently carrying out waste collection and disposal duties.
This is a temporary full-time role, ideal for someone with strong driving experience and a flexible, hands-on approach. While the role is predominantly driving-based, you\\\’ll also support operations at household recycling centres, waste collection rounds, and the waste transfer station.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive large refuse collection and stillage vehicles (Class C) — approx. 80% driving duties
- Operate smaller refuse vehicles and vans (up to 7.5 tonnes) as needed
- Manage a small team of loaders, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely
- Carry out daily vehicle checks and report any issues promptly
- Safely operate bin-lifting equipment and handle various types of waste containers
- Assist with contamination checks and ensure waste is sorted correctly
- Advise customers on correct waste disposal and recycling practices
- Update in-cab technology systems or complete accurate paper records
- Maintain health and safety standards at all times
What We\’re Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
- Valid HGV Class 2 (Category C) licence
- Completed Driver CPC training and valid digital tachograph card
- Experience managing or supervising a small team
- Strong understanding of manual handling techniques and safe machinery operation
- Confident using digital systems or completing paper records
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to handle difficult situations or challenging customers professionally
- Strong local knowledge of the Scunthorpe area
- Able to work under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines
- Excellent customer service skills, with a tactful and diplomatic approach
- Capable of working both independently and as part of a team
Desirable
- WAMITAB qualification in a relevant field
- Certificate of competence to operate machinery such as a loading shovel or JCB 360
