What Is Publishing Development—and Why Does It Matter?

Publishing Development is the department at Frontiers you’ll be joining as a Journal Specialist. It plays a central role in shaping the future of scientific publishing. Our team works closely with editors and researchers to build strong journal communities, launch impactful article collections (Research Topics), and ensure each specialty section reaches its full potential. It’s not just about publishing—it’s about driving progress, fostering collaboration, and supporting our mission of open, accessible science.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the journey: Manage the full process from initial outreach, develop solid opportunities, launch Research Topics, engage contributors, and drive high‑quality submissions.
  • Commission with impact: Grow and manage a dynamic sales pipeline, from editor engagement to publication.
  • Build trust: Cultivate and manage relationships with editors to attract contributions to research topics and publications.
  • Be the face of the journal: Participate in conferences to engage with researchers, build research topics/campaigns, and grow journal name recognition.
  • Lead community initiatives: Organize and present at workshops or webinars, establishing a community‑driven journal.
  • Drive development: Manage tasks and processes related to journal and section growth, including recruiting new editors for the journal and its sections.

About You

  • You’ve got sales or business development experience and a results‑driven mindset.
  • You thrive in fast‑paced environments and handle high volumes of work with confidence.
  • You’re a natural communicator—personable, persuasive, and great at building relationships.
  • You’re entrepreneurial—you spot opportunities and act on them.
