Working closely with Payroll Managers and senior stakeholders, you will help ensure the delivery of high-quality payroll services to clients and beneficiaries. You will also play an important role in supporting strategic change initiatives, operational improvements and overall business performance. This role combines technical payroll expertise, people management, and client relationship management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead service delivery for a portfolio of payroll clients, ensuring quality, profitability and sustainability.
- Line manage and support a team of payroll professionals, including workflow management and performance monitoring.
- Monitor accuracy, KPIs and SLAs, taking action to address risks and performance issues.
- Identify training needs and support development, mentoring and coaching across the team.
- Conduct regular one-to-ones, probation reviews and support appraisal processes.
- Act as a technical lead, presenting complex payroll and legislative matters to colleagues.
- Support compliance with mandatory training, governance and operational initiatives.
- Drive process improvement, efficiency and innovation across payroll delivery.
- Maintain a strong client-focused approach, building trusted relationships with clients and internal teams.
- Proactively identify and resolve payroll issues to minimise impact on end users.
- Oversee project delivery for annual and ad hoc payroll activities (e.g. year-end returns, pay increases).
- Support recruitment activity, including interviews.
About You
Essential experience:
- Strong, demonstrable expertise in payroll administration activities with a solid understanding of payroll legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Experience running computerised payrolls, including month-end and year-end processing.
- Previous supervisory or management experience (e.g. performance management, appraisals, recruitment).
- Strong numerical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Confident IT user (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
This role typically suits candidates with 4+ years' payroll experience, though all relevant backgrounds will be considered.
