Ecommerce Trading & Optimisation Manager

Reports to:Senior Ecommerce Manager

Location:Canary Wharf (Head Office)

Function:Ecommerce

The Role

The Ecommerce Trading & Optimisation Manager owns the day-to-day commercial performance of the Frive website: how the range is merchandised, how the pages read, and how well the site converts. This is a dedicated on-site role, created because trading, digital merchandising, product content and conversion optimisation deserve one owner rather than being shared out across a broader remit.

Reporting to the Senior Ecommerce Manager, you take on the site itself — ranging and merchandising decisions, personalisation, the conversion optimisation programme, product detail page quality, and the weekly trading rhythm. The Senior Ecommerce Manager retains the ecommerce P&L, channel strategy, the promotional calendar and supply chain coordination, and you work to the commercial targets they set.

This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports. What makes it possible at this scope is AI. We expect you to use Claude and similar tools to build landing pages, generate and iterate test variants, draft and scale product content, and pull your own analysis — doing in a day what would previously have taken a week and a queue behind a developer. You will work alongside the eCom Exec, who handles deeper technical and platform work; in practice you build and ship the majority of your own page and test work, and hand over what genuinely needs engineering.

Responsibilities

AI-Assisted Build & Experimentation

  • Using Claude and comparable AI tools to build and iterate landing pages, product page modules, promotional templates and test variants — taking ideas to live pages without waiting on a development queue.
  • Producing multiple variants of a test quickly, so the constraint on our testing programme is traffic and prioritisation rather than build time.
  • Using AI to draft and scale product copy, meta content, category descriptions and on-site messaging, then editing to brand voice rather than publishing raw output.
  • Building your own analysis and reporting with AI assistance — querying data, summarising test results, spotting patterns across product and category performance.
  • Applying judgement about where AI output is safe to ship and where it is not: nutritional, allergen and ingredient information always requires human verification and sign-off before it goes live, without exception.
  • Sharing what works. As the first hire using these tools day to day, you will set the practical standards other people in the team follow.
  • Owning the day-to-day trading of the website: ranging, category and collection merchandising, on-site search and sort order, and cross-sell and upsell placement.
  • Designing and running personalisation across the site — tailoring recommendations, collections and merchandising by customer segment, purchase history and behaviour — and proving the uplift it delivers.
  • Driving average order value and basket size through merchandising: bundles, cross-sell, threshold mechanics, subscription add-ons and range architecture.
  • Running the weekly trading rhythm — reviewing performance by product, category and landing page, and acting on what you find within the same week.
  • Building and merchandising landing pages for new product launches, limited releases, seasonal ranges and promotional activity, against the calendar agreed with the Senior Ecommerce Manager.
  • Maintaining a prioritised backlog of site improvements, sequenced by expected commercial impact against effort to build.
  • Owning the CRO programme end to end: research, hypothesis, test design, analysis, and rolling out what wins.
  • Prioritising a focused testing roadmap suited to our traffic volumes, concentrating on the pages where tests can realistically reach significance — home, category, product detail, basket and checkout.
  • Using qualitative research (session recordings, heatmaps, on-site surveys, user testing) both to generate hypotheses and to make good decisions on pages where traffic is too low for a conclusive test.
  • Owning basket and checkout conversion, including identifying and fixing drop-off points in the purchase journey.
  • Maintaining a shared test log covering wins, losses and inconclusive results, so that learning compounds rather than being repeated.

Product Content & PDP Quality

  • Owning the quality and consistency of product detail pages: imagery, copy, nutritional and ingredient information, reviews and on-page merchandising modules.
  • Setting and maintaining content standards and a QA process, so every launch goes live complete and correct rather than being fixed afterwards.
  • Making sure product content meets food labelling and allergen requirements, working with the relevant technical and compliance contacts.
  • Improving on-site search and navigation so customers can actually find what they want.

Reporting & Insight

  • Reporting weekly on trading and conversion performance: sessions, conversion rate, AOV, units per order, revenue and margin by category, and page-level performance.
  • Reporting the cumulative impact of the CRO and personalisation programmes, with honest attribution — including what did not work.
  • Surfacing range gaps, stock problems and content issues that show up in the numbers to the Senior Ecommerce Manager and the wider team.
  • Working with the eCom Exec on platform, integration and technical work that sits beyond what you can build yourself.
  • Partnering with performance marketing and CRM so landing pages and on-site experience match what campaigns promise.
  • Working with product and NPD teams to get launch information early enough to merchandise it properly.
  • Managing CRO, design or content agency partners where we use them.

About You

  • You have 3–5+ years in ecommerce, with a meaningful share of that in trading, digital merchandising or optimisation rather than adjacent to it.
  • You already use AI tools as part of how you work — not as a curiosity, but to ship things. You can show us pages, variants, content or analysis you have produced with them.
  • You are a capable prompter: you can get a usable landing page or test variant out of Claude, spot where the output is weak, and iterate rather than accepting the first attempt.
  • You have sound judgement about where AI belongs. You know that a nutritional claim, an allergen statement or a price needs verifying by a human, and you would never ship one unchecked.
  • You have run A/B tests yourself — designed them, called them, and rolled them out — including at moderate traffic volumes where you cannot test everything and prioritisation is the actual skill.
  • You have driven AOV or basket size deliberately, through merchandising or personalisation, and can talk through what worked and what did not.
  • You are hands-on with Shopify or a comparable platform, and with a testing tool such as VWO, Convert, AB Tasty or Optimizely.
  • You are confident in GA4 and can build the reports you need rather than waiting for someone else to.
  • You think commercially: you are comfortable talking about margin, AOV and pounds, not only conversion percentage points.
  • You are happy owning a set of numbers and being accountable for them week to week, without a team beneath you.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in food, beverage or CPG, particularly with chilled or short shelf-life products.
  • Experience with a personalisation or recommendation engine.
  • Experience with subscription or replenishment models.
  • Familiarity with Klaviyo or comparable email/SMS platforms.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS or Shopify Liquid — enough to read, spec and sanity-check AI-generated output.
  • Experience building small internal tools or automations with AI assistance.
  • Experience running qualitative research or moderated user testing.

How We Will Measure Success

In the first twelve months, we would expect to see:

  • A clear increase in average order value, with the merchandising and personalisation tactics behind it identified rather than assumed.
  • Measurable uplift in basket size and units per order, attributable to specific cross-sell, bundling and threshold mechanics you have implemented.
  • Personalised experiences running across the site, each with a measured uplift against a control — in AOV, conversion or repeat purchase — rather than simply being live.
  • A measurable improvement in site conversion rate, and a documented test programme showing how it was achieved.
  • Product launches going live fully merchandised and content-complete on day one, as a matter of routine.
  • A meaningful reduction in the time it takes to get a landing page or test variant live, through your use of AI tooling.
