Overview

This is a 12 month fixed term post based at Frimley Park Hospital. The post is a replacement position for a middle grade to support for both inpatient and daycase Haematology services. The contract allows participation in 1 in 8 weekend work and non-resident overnight on calls, supported by a named consultant.

Main duties of the job The post would be ideally suited to someone with an interest in Haematology, who may have some experience in the field or is considering applying to specialty training in the future. There would be a wide range of learning opportunities in the post, with the potential for projects/QIP’s/audits and publications to help with future applications for specialty training.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The postholder will carry out or organise practical procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, trephine biopsies, lumbar puncture, pleural drainage, ascitic drain insertion, venesections and care of tunneled central venous catheters (including their removal when appropriate). Full training in these procedures will be made available to the appointee if necessary. The postholder will liaise regularly with nursing staff on the Intravenous and Vascular Access Services (IVAS) unit regarding arrangements for patients undergoing non-chemotherapy day case treatments (eg. Blood transfusion, IV bisphosphonates, venesections etc).

The postholder may also assist in the assessment and management of follow-up out-patients in haematology clinics under the supervision of the appropriate consultant (one or two clinics per week). The postholder will liaise with the Haematology SpR and junior doctors to ensure that appropriate daytime cover for inpatients is always available (i.e., plan and negotiate/agree all planned leave).

The postholder will liaise with the Haematology SpR to provide weekend cover for the haematology inpatients approximately 1 in 8 weekends. This will consist of a ward round, which would normally be on a Saturday and last about half a day.

The postholder is encouraged to supervise the junior doctors concerning management of clinical haematology cases and may be required to assist them to write discharge summaries. Involvement in developing clinical management and chemotherapy protocols and participation in medical audit and in the departmental journal club will be encouraged. Involvement with the education of other junior doctors within the Trust will also be encouraged.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • 2 years experience in hospital general medicine roles at FY2 level or above.
  • Evidence of broad training/competency in general medicine at CMT level. Willingness to be involved in teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels as necessary including laboratory scientists in Haematology.
  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of some training and experience in laboratory and clinical aspects of Haematology.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence based practice
  • Participation in audit projects related to haematological practice
