As a Phlebotomist, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care by collecting high-quality blood samples from patients across Frimley Park Hospital, as well as local sites including Farnham Hospital and the Aldershot Centre for Health. Working within both inpatient wards and outpatient departments, you will help ensure that accurate and timely blood samples are available for diagnostic testing, enabling clinicians to make effective treatment decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Obtain accurate and safe blood samples from patients in ward and outpatient settings.
- Provide a professional, caring and reassuring service to patients, ensuring all samples are correctly labelled and promptly delivered to the laboratory.
- Maintain excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good manual dexterity and the ability to remain calm and efficient under pressure.
- Work independently and as part of a supportive team, adapting to changing workloads and covering other local sites as required.
- Adhere to the department’s operating hours (Monday to Friday, 08:00-17:00) with rotational cover for bank holidays.
- Operate with flexibility as key to the role.
- Start as an entry-level Band 2 position with the opportunity to progress to Band 3 following successful completion of training and competency assessments.
- Receive full support and supervision throughout development.
- Use approved venepuncture techniques to collect blood samples from adult patients across a range of clinical areas, and obtain training for paediatric phlebotomy (ages 10-16).
- Select and use appropriate equipment for each procedure, ensuring patient comfort, safety and dignity at all times.
- Strictly adhere to infection control, health and safety, and risk management procedures, particularly when working with high-risk patients or samples.
- Maintain awareness of clinical conditions that may affect sample quality, applying correct techniques for site selection, tourniquet use and tube choice.
- Accurately label, handle, and package all specimens in line with departmental and Trust policies to ensure sample integrity during transportation to the laboratory.
- Consistently follow protocols to minimise risk and uphold the highest standards of clinical practice and patient care.
