Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse – Medical Acute Dependency Unit (MADU)

Frimley Park Hospital

The Medical Acute Dependency Unit (MADU) is a 12‑bedded specialist unit providing Level 1 and Level 2 critical care for patients with a wide range of acute medical needs. The unit is equipped for full cardiac monitoring and non‑invasive ventilation, supporting patients with conditions such as GI bleeds, DKA, Type 1 and Type 2 respiratory failure, heart failure, severe electrolyte imbalances, and those requiring central or arterial line monitoring.

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and dynamic Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to join our experienced and friendly multidisciplinary team.

What We’re Looking For

  • A confident and adaptable nurse with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Clinical experience in Respiratory, Acute Medicine or HDU/ITU nursing
  • Some previous managerial or team‑leading experience
  • A genuine enthusiasm for caring for acutely unwell medical patients
  • A commitment to high standards of patient care, safety and service improvement

Main duties of the job

  • In partnership with senior multi‑professional colleagues, maintain and develop a flexible high dependency service, able to respond to trust requirements.
  • To be responsible for the development and leadership of the clinical nursing team to ensure the highest standard of care is met in line with local and national recommendations.

  • Current NMC registration
  • ENB 998 Teaching and assessing course or equivalent Mentorship preparation course.
  • ILS

Desirable criteria

  • Degree level registration

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult / stressful situations effectively
  • Able to prioritise workload (self and others) and meet deadlines
  • Leadership and influencing skills
  • Supervising, teaching and assessing staff

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience in an HDU environment with experience of caring for patients requiring NIV

Special Requirements

  • Able to work flexible shifts, weekends and bank holidays as required
