Fresh Start in Education

Description

Be more than an educator. Be the reason a young person believes in a brighter future.

Many of our young people with SEMH needs or SEN have faced challenges that have left them feeling discouraged or disconnected from education. Every child deserves someone who won't give up on them - could that be you?

At Fresh Start in Education, we’re looking for proactive, person‑centred people to design and deliver personalised sessions that build confidence and a sense of hope for young people currently out of education in Dorset. Whether it’s supporting a student with their online learning, helping them develop strategies for emotional regulation, or planning educational sessions that will spark their curiosity, you’ll inspire students to rediscover the joy of learning in a way that works for them. One learner, one relationship, one small step at a time.

With allowances for travel and resources and full support from our dedicated team, this flexible role gives you the freedom to deliver learning in the ways that you feel best meet the student’s needs and interests.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working 1:1 or 2:1 with young people in their homes or specialist settings in Dorset
  • Planning and delivering personalised, creative, educational sessions that reflect each learner’s needs, interests and abilities
  • Running sessions during the school day (term time only) that typically last 3 to 5 hours
  • Engaging with students who may have ASD, ADHD, SEMH needs, GDD or complex needs and helping them achieve outcomes at their pace
  • Working flexibly as part of a compassionate, expert‑led team that values you and your skills

Who we’re looking for:

  • Experience (at least 1 year) as teachers, tutors, teaching assistants, mentors, SEN specialists and education professionals who have directly supported young people with SEN/SEMH needs
  • A background in Primary, Secondary, Functional Skills or Post 16 teaching, or specialist SEND environments
  • De‑scalation and emotional regulation skills
  • A minimum of 2 consistent weekdays available
  • An up‑to‑date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection

Experience either with young adults with mental health needs, or using PECS with younger children would also be desirable for students in this area.

What you can expect from Fresh Start in Education

  • £25–£35 per hour, depending on experience
  • Travel subsidy and £15 per session resource allowance
  • Free access to counselling and wellbeing services and pension option
  • Dedicated line manager, support and inclusion in a supportive, expert team
  • Bank staff role (PAYE), offering both short‑term and long‑term placements

Due to the nature of the work and our commitment to safeguarding our students, you will be required to undergo thorough background checks including ID, Right to Work and employment checks and will also require an enhanced DBS.
