Our client is seeking a skilled and dedicated Horticulturalist to join their growing landscape and garden team on a 2,500-acre prestigious private estate located near the Wiltshire/Hampshire border. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate horticultural professional to contribute to the care and presentation of high-quality parkland and landscaped grounds.
Working within the Parkland team, the Horticulturalist will report to the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Head Gardener. The role requires a strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, and a proactive, flexible approach.
The Role
- Garden & Parkland Maintenance
- Assist the Team Leader in planning and carrying out daily parkland and garden maintenance tasks.
- Operate pedestrian, ride-on and tractor-mounted grass-cutting equipment to maintain high-quality amenity lawns and grassland.
- Carry out regular watering, weeding, pruning and fertilising.
- Monitor and control lawn pests and diseases across the Estate.
- Plant, cultivate and maintain lawns, wildflower meadows, shrubs, trees and ornamental planting.
- Assist with landscaping and enhancement projects.
- Maintain tools, machinery and equipment in good working order.
- Attention to Detail & Estate Standards
- Regularly inspect all areas, including less visible locations, to ensure they are tidy, weed-free and well presented.
- Maintain high-traffic areas to an exceptional standard at all times.
- Respect the privacy and confidentiality of the estateβs owners, residents and guests.
- Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with other gardeners and estate teams to ensure efficient operations.
- Communicate clearly with the Team Leader regarding issues, supplies and maintenance requirements.
- Inventory & Equipment
- Assist with managing gardening supplies and equipment.
- Promptly report any faults, maintenance or repair needs.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work in accordance with all health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Read, understand and follow risk assessments and safety procedures.
- Help ensure a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for all estate users at all times.
Experience & Skills Required
- Proven experience in amenity horticulture, groundsmanship or landscaping.
- Strong knowledge of turf care and lawn maintenance.
- Experience working with wildflower meadows (preferred).
- Confident operating a wide range of machinery; extensive machinery experience essential.
- Relevant certifications preferred, including:
- Chainsaw maintenance and use / tree felling
- Ride-on and pedestrian mowers
- Tractor operation
- PA1, PA6a
- Horticulture or groundsmanship qualifications (RHS Level 2 or above).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Physically fit with the stamina for manual outdoor work.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards.
- Discrete, reliable, trustworthy and able to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Proactive, adaptable and willing to support other estate teams when required.
This role is physically demanding and involves regular use of heavy machinery. The Horticulturalist will work across various areas of the Estate and must be flexible, with occasional weekend work required.
