Our client is seeking a skilled and dedicated Gardener to join their growing Landscape and Garden team on a 2,500-acre prestigious private estate located near the Wiltshire/Hampshire border. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate horticultural professional to contribute to the care, development and presentation of high-quality ornamental, productive and display gardens.
Working within the Walled Garden Team, the Gardener will report to the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Head Gardener. The role requires a strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, and a proactive, flexible approach.
The Role- Garden Care & Maintenance
- Assist the Team Leader in planning and carrying out daily garden maintenance tasks.
- Undertake regular watering, weeding, pruning and fertilising of plants, both outdoors and within glasshouse environments.
- Monitor and control pests and diseases.
- Maintain garden tools, machinery and equipment in good working condition.
- Plant, cultivate and maintain:
- Vegetables and fruit
- Cut flowers and ornamental displays
- Shrubs and trees
- Indoor plants and containerised outdoor plants
- Care for indoor and containerised outdoor plants across the Estate.
- Propagate seasonal vegetables using a range of methods to supply replacement plants for vegetable and fruit displays.
- Assist with landscaping and seasonal garden projects as required.
- Regularly inspect all areas, including less visible locations, to ensure they are tidy, weed-free and well presented.
- Maintain high-traffic and visitor-facing areas to an exceptional standard.
- Always respect the privacy and confidentiality of the estateβs owners, residents and guests.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the garden team to ensure efficient operations and task coverage.
- Communicate effectively with the Team Leader regarding issues, supply requirements or maintenance concerns.
- Assist in managing gardening supplies and equipment, ensuring stock levels and condition are maintained.
- Promptly report any maintenance or repair requirements.
- Ensure all activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Read, understand and follow all risk assessments and safety procedures.
- Help ensure a safe, welcoming and well-maintained environment for owners, residents, staff and visitors at all times, regardless of weather or operational challenges.
- Previous practical experience in fruit and vegetable production (preferred).
- Experience working with glasshouse displays (advantage).
- Sound knowledge of plant care and maintenance techniques, including glasshouse production.
- Experience using horticultural power tools.
- Relevant machinery certifications preferred, including:
- Compact tractors
- Small utility vehicles
- PA1 and PA6a
This role involves regular physical activity, including lifting, bending and standing for extended periods. The Gardener will work across various areas of the Estate and may be required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as required.
