Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8am – 4.30pm & Friday 8am – 3.30pm, term time only (plus 5 INSET days & 10 Development Days)

Salary: £28,933 to £33,858 per annum (dependant on experience and qualifications)

THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity has become available within Fresh Futures’ Brian Jackson College Team. We are seeking enthusiastic GCSE English Tutor to join our team at the Huddersfield provision working across KS3/KS4.

Why the role exists and overall responsibility

The successful candidates will play a vital role in supporting and have responsibility for the learning of disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils in the school, by providing high quality teaching to pupils, within a specialist subject, in line with national curriculum guidelines.

Main activities

  • Plan classes in line with the curriculum as relevant to the age and ability group/subjects that you teach.
  • Prepare and develop teaching materials, teaching programmes and pastoral arrangements as appropriate.
  • Provide an inspiring, motivating and challenging environment to enable pupils to fulfil their potential.
  • Provide different techniques to engage pupils in active, hands on, creative problem-based learning.
  • Provide teaching based on each pupil’s individual needs, capabilities and learning preferences.
  • Apply a range of observation, assessment, monitoring and recording strategies as a basis for setting challenging learning objectives for pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions, monitoring learners progress and levels of attainment.
  • Provide pupils with feedback to enable ongoing learning and development.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy including the correct use of spoken English (whatever your specialist subject).

Behaviour and safety

  • Establish a safe, purposeful and stimulating environment for pupils.
  • Use the school’s framework for behaviour management to implement a range of strategies, consistently and fairly.

Team working and collaboration

  • Participate in any relevant meetings/professional development opportunities at the school, which relate to learners, curriculum or organisation of the school including pastoral arrangements.
  • Take part as required in the review, development and management of the activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.

Wider professional responsibilities

  • Ensure parents/carers are kept informed of pupils’ progress, achievements and well being.
  • Co-ordinate delivery and progress across both provisions working collaboratively with all teaching staff employed at Brian Jackson College.
  • To ensure that adequate information is provided in the event that ‘cover’ is needed for absence due to sickness or any other cause.

Administration

  • Ensure pupil records and plans are kept up to date.
  • Be fully responsible for marking of all pupil work following the schools marking policy.

Safeguarding Duties and Responsibilities

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The following duties are expected of all staff:

  • Proactively ensuring the effective implementation of Child Protection and other related policies.
  • Ensuring full compliance with all relevant statutory regulations as well as all school policies, Health & Safety regulations etc.
  • Communicating effectively with all relevant stakeholders including colleagues, students, parents and outside agencies as appropriate.

Other Duties

  • To promote Equality and Diversity in all aspects of work.
  • To co-operate with the promotion and maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment and own health and safety.
  • Perform any reasonable duties as requested by the head teacher.

Knowledge, training and experience required

  • Experience working with KS3 & KS4 pupils in Alternative provision or PRU setting.
  • Specialist subject PGCE/QTS or equivalent.
  • Experience of delivering GCSE within the national curriculum, and Functional Skills.
  • Experience of assessing, recording and reporting on pupils learning.
  • Working with young people experiencing SEMH.
  • Training in behaviour management and SEN provision within the classroom.
