Purpose and Scope
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Related Education
- Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
Treatment
- Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, and monitor vital signs.
- Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatment, respond to intradialytic problems, and document all procedures accurately.
- Monitor patient response, evaluate access, and ensure safety alarms are active.
- Handle lab specimens, infection control, and participate in transitional care activities.
Staff and Communication
- Assist in training staff, follow organizational policies, maintain cleanliness, and ensure effective communication with patients and staff.
Record Keeping and Infection Control
- Maintain accurate treatment records, participate in CQI activities, and adhere to infection control policies.
Physical Demands and Conditions
Includes lifting, standing, and working in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals.
Education and Licenses
