We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Registered General Nurse (RGN) to join our General Practice team as a Treatment Room Nurse. This role is ideally suited to an experienced nurse who is confident in delivering high-quality clinical care within a primary care setting and is looking to develop their career in General Practice.

Working as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for delivering a range of treatment room services to our patient population, including wound care, chronic disease monitoring, immunisations, cervical screening, and health promotion activities, in line with practice protocols and national guidelines. Applicants must be an NMC-registered nurse with relevant clinical experience, strong organisational skills, and a patient-centred approach to care. Main duties of the job

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to patients attending the treatment room in line with practice protocols and NHS guidelines.
  • Undertake a range of treatment room procedures, including, but not limited to wound care (acute and chronic), travel vaccinations, suture and staple removal, ear care (where trained), ECGs, and phlebotomy.
  • Administer immunisations and vaccinations in accordance with the national immunisation schedule, patient group directions (PGDs), and local policies.
  • Perform cervical screening in line with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (training provided).
  • Support the monitoring and management of long-term conditions such as asthma, COPD, hypertension and diabetes, within agreed competencies and under supervision where required.
  • Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities, including lifestyle advice, smoking cessation support and signposting to appropriate services.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive patient records using the clinical system in line with information governance and confidentiality requirements.
  • Contribute to infection prevention and control, cold chain management and safe handling and storage of medicines and vaccines.
  • Participate in clinical audits, QI activities and the maintenance of clinical standards within the practice.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, mandatory training and clinical supervision to support role development within General Practice.

Job responsibilities

The Practice Nurse / Treatment Room Nurse will work as part of the General Practice multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred nursing care. The post holder will be responsible for the provision of treatment room services and selected long-term condition support, working within their scope of practice, agreed competencies and practice protocols. The role is suitable for a Registered General Nurse who does not hold a formal Practice Nurse diploma but has relevant clinical experience and is keen to develop their skills within General Practice. The practice is committed to supporting training and professional development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care in line with NHS standards, local policies, and clinical guidelines.
  • Undertake treatment room procedures including: acute and chronic wound care, leg ulcer assessment and management, suture and staple removal, phlebotomy, ECG recording, ear care (where trained).
  • Administer immunisations and vaccinations in accordance with the national immunisation schedule, Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and practice policy.
  • Carry out cervical screening in line with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (subject to training and competency).
  • Support the monitoring and management of patients with long-term conditions such as asthma, COPD, hypertension and diabetes, within agreed clinical competence and under GP supervision as required.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration, safeguarding concerns and medical emergencies, escalating to a GP or senior clinician when necessary.
  • Promote health education and disease prevention, providing lifestyle advice and signposting patients to appropriate services.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and practice in accordance with the NMC Code.
  • Work within individual scope of practice, recognising limitations and seeking advice or supervision when required.
  • Participate in appraisal, clinical supervision and personal development planning.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and mandatory training relevant to the role.
  • Support the learning and development of students, new staff or colleagues where appropriate.

Communication and Team Working

  • Work collaboratively with GPs, healthcare assistants, pharmacists and the wider primary care team.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues to support safe and coordinated care.
  • Contribute positively to team meetings and practice initiatives.

Governance, Quality and Safety

  • Maintain accurate, clear and contemporaneous clinical records using the practice clinical system.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies, including cold chain management and vaccine storage.
  • Ensure safe handling, administration and storage of medicines in line with legislation and practice policy.
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and service development activities.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and comply with information governance requirements.

Other Responsibilities

  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role as agreed with the Practice Manager or Clinical Lead.
  • Maintain a flexible approach to working patterns to meet service needs.

Person Specification

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.
  • Recognised nursing qualification (e.g. Diploma or Degree in Adult Nursing).
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) relevant to clinical practice.
  • Competent in core clinical skills appropriate to a treatment room role (with training and support where required).
  • Evidence of training or qualifications relevant to General Practice nursing (e.g. wound care, immunisations, cervical screening, long-term conditions).
  • Cervical screening qualification (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Immunisation and vaccination training, including working under Patient Group Directions (PGDs).
  • Mentorship or assessor qualification, or willingness to undertake.
  • Previous experience or training within an NHS primary care setting.

Experience

  • Post-registration experience as a Registered General Nurse in a clinical setting.
  • Experience of delivering safe, effective and patient-centred nursing care.
  • Experience of undertaking clinical procedures relevant to a treatment room environment (e.g. wound care, phlebotomy, ECGs) or evidence of transferable skills.
  • Experience of maintaining accurate and contemporaneous clinical records.
  • Experience of working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of prioritising workload and managing time effectively in a busy clinical environment.
  • Previous experience working in a General Practice or primary care setting within the NHS.
  • Experience in administering immunisations and vaccinations.
  • Experience in cervical screening.
  • Experience in supporting patients with long-term conditions (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension).
  • Experience of clinical audit, quality improvement or service development activities.
  • Experience of working under Patient Group Directions (PGDs).
