Purpose of Job
To supervise all terminal operations including non-traditional Freightliner duties on a shift-by-shift basis ensuring that safe, efficient and cost-effective working is achieved and that the Quality of Service to the customer is of the highest order.
- Supervise and Mentor all Operations Staff in the performance of their duties ensuring any training needs are highlighted.
- Ensure all Terminal and Rail operations are carried out in compliance with Freightliner standards and policies, in addition to relevant legislation.
- The role is accountable for the smooth running of the shift, All Terminal operational Staff on a shift by shift basis.
- Ensure all staff on your shift operates within the current Safety Legislation and company policies, all aspects of the HASAW are correctly applied.
- Ensuring staff under your control comply with the local Health and Safety Policy and Local Working instructions.
- Ensure a safe working environment in all operational areas.
- Ensure the safety of all equipment, rail and road movements within the Terminal.
- Ensure the Safe loading and unloading of trains and that they are prepared and fit to travel in accordance with Freightliner standards and requirements.
- Ensure staff under your control have received adequate information and training instructions related to their duties, and are prepared and competent to carry out the duties required of them.
- Lead and control the members of the Handling Team on a shift-by-shift basis.
- Ensure maximum utilisation of all plant equipment, and ensure coverage is provided to all Terminal Customers to meet Terminal needs.
- Ensure rosters and breaks are met, and where required report staff failing to comply with their duties and requirements to Rail Supervisor 1 / Operations or General Manager.
- Supervise all staff reporting for duty ensuring that they are fit for duty and are in possession of all necessary documentation.
- Arrival and berthing of trains and locomotives and the preparation and departure of trains and locomotives ensuring compliance with Freightliner requirements including required paperwork and update of systems where required.
- This includes maintaining competency for pre-departure checks and in-service wagon examination.
- Report all Incidents/Near Miss Reports during your turn of duty and submit completed reports to the Rail Supervisor 1 / Terminal Operations Manager using the required systems.
- Ensure terminal operations are efficient for all visiting drivers and contractors, including inductions and control of access or lifting where required.
- Liaise with all other Departments and external stakeholders when requested with respect to Terminal needs and actions as required, including reporting on yard operation/equipment availability/site infrastructure within Freightliner management structure.
Experience and Knowledge Required
- Fully Competent in Train Operations in accordance with Freightliner standards on train Shunting Preparation and Departure, including in service wagon examination.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Must develop and maintain Supervisory skills and possess 2 years' experience in train working at supervisory level.
