Overview
HRBP IM Logistics β North role at Freightliner. Freightliner is the UK\βs largest maritime intermodal logistics operator, transporting containers from major deep-sea ports to a national network of inland terminals, and a leading operator in UK Heavy Haul rail freight. The group operates across Europe with Intermodal and Heavy Haul rail freight services.
Location: Flexible, with travel expected. Reports to: Head of HR Operations, G&W UK/ Europe Region. Safety Critical: No. On call: No, but respond to issues as soon as practical when they arise, e.g. weekends, shifts.
Purpose of the Role: Reporting to the Head of HR IM Logistics and Central Services, you will provide a strategic and operational interface between the HR function and the Intermodal (IML) business to drive continuous improvement in the customer experience and maximize business performance. You will coach, train, support and challenge Terminal & Road Services teams to deliver the business strategy and organisational culture through people. This is a management position based in each business service, fostering close working relationships to deliver an excellent HR service. You will promote a mature, pragmatic functional approach, challenging where appropriate and professional in all delivery aspects.
Responsibilities
- Provide professional HR advice, coaching and support to cross-functional management (SLT to Line) within Terminal & Road Services and across a defined geographical area, in line with company/group policy and procedures.
- Identify opportunities to develop business services products by demonstrating the value of our people and influencing others to improve productivity, attendance and engagement.
- Develop and deliver targeted line manager up-skilling, working with the wider HR team on company-wide initiatives and leadership of the wider talent agenda (e.g. performance development, succession planning).
- Ensure the people strategy aligns with the business agenda and anticipates future changes affecting Rail Services.
- Interpret and apply relevant collective agreements within Terminal & Road Services.
- Collaborate with local management and employee representatives to resolve problems at source; escalate grievances, disciplinary or attendance issues as needed.
- Communicate effectively with senior leadership across the business to ensure managers are competent and confident in applying HR policies and practice.
- Lead complex HR cases and provide high-level advice to minimise risk and financial exposure.
- Coach managers to devise pragmatic, business-focused solutions aligned with policy and employment law.
- Work with line managers to minimise risk of tribunals and share lessons learned with the broader teams.
- Collaborate with business leaders to implement and review HRIS systems and processes supporting strategic aims.
- Attend and support local and business councils, maintaining positive relationships with trade unions; engage with occupational health and employee assistance providers to promote attendance and wellbeing.
- Embed relevant legislation across Terminal & Road Services; lead engagement actions and ensure robust recruitment, induction and development programs.
- Undertake ad hoc projects as required.
Key Job Requirements
- Experience in a matrix organization and ability to support the HR Business Partnering framework within it.
- Relevant degree, CIPD qualified or equivalent via demonstrable experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of multiple terms and conditions relevant to the business and ability to apply them.
- Strong knowledge of current employment legislation and its practical application.
- Experience drafting, negotiating and executing settlement agreements.
- Experience in a professional HR function dealing with various Trade Unions.
- Ability to manage high-volume HR processes and complex issues in a busy environment.
- IT skills (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
- Strong business awareness and credibility to influence others; excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills.
- Ability to work independently and under deadlines; knowledge of disciplinary, grievance, attendance and performance management systems.
- Experience leading change management initiatives (e.g., restructuring, TUPE, technology changes).
- Strong organizational skills and flexibility across a broad range of HR topics; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to travel and work across a wide geographical area.
