Purpose of Role

To provide a comprehensive support role to the Train Service Controllers, Payroll, Rosters and operational staff by monitoring and managing defined activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safety: You have specific duties and responsibilities on a day-to-day basis for the occupational health and safety of colleagues, stakeholders and other rail users. Develop a positive safety culture within your area of responsibility, supported by robust safety processes in accordance with company standards, industry standards and legislation. Ensure that where appropriate, actions are carried out in accordance with emergency procedures for major incidents/accidents and other role-relevant rules, procedures and instructions. Report any operating or occupational accidents and incidents involving employees that you identify or are identified to you by others to your line manager. Ensure safety equipment you are trained to use is deployed properly and that safety-critical staff comply with the company Drug and Alcohol Policy (RG_GEN023). Manage the normal day-to-day operation of Freightliner services in a safe and proper manner in accordance with the Safety Certificate, Railway Group Standards and Freightliner requirements via company standards and training. Ensure all communication related to Freightliner train services complies with current operating rules, regulations and notices. Ensure statutory reporting is carried out as required and take prompt action to safeguard people, equipment and infrastructure in normal and out-of-course situations as detailed in company standards. Comply with instructions in company standards and observe the OPSHH006 standard; complete mandatory safety training as/when required.
  • Compliance and Standards: Booking staff on/off duty and capturing real-time hours worked, including overtime, rest day working, harmonisation payments and persuasion payments. Monitor staff who fail to book on as rostered and follow up; book or approve taxis for company staff as required. Report staff sickness to appropriate managers and roster sections via the defined reporting process. Ensure fatigue checks are undertaken on rest-day available staff before they are requested to work. Assist Train Service Controllers to provide driver and ground staff cover after sickness or service disruption. Complete medication advice forms as required and issue safety communications messages throughout the business. Monitor and flag drivers and/or ground staff who may be late on duty following late running; manage the driver exceedance register and issue reference numbers as required. Issue emergency PPE codes to operational staff and train running sitrep emails to specified users and customers as required. Undertake additional/alternative work as directed by your line manager, when competent.

Experience, Knowledge, Qualifications and Training

  • Experience of Railway Operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure and in emergency situations.
  • Good negotiation skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Keen and conscientious approach to work with the ability to concentrate on detailed information for long periods.
