Purpose of Job

To drive trains in accordance with Rules & Regulations, Competency Based Standards for Train Driving and Freightliner’s Defensive Driving Policy.

Principal Activities

  • Responsible for attending and reporting for duty at the time and place directed, ensuring you are physically fit to carry out the duties of a Train Driver.
  • Responsible for unsupervised safe movement of traction.
  • Responsible for absorbing and retaining knowledge of traction, routes, rules and regulations, and operating notices.
  • Be able to act and adjust driving technique accordingly to suit prevailing conditions (e.g. weather, rail conditions).
  • Be vigilant in observing all signals applicable to train movements and immediately report any irregularities to the signalman concerned.
  • Should any delay occur, obtain an explanation from the signalman to keep relevant people up to date.
  • Responsible for reporting to Network Rail by the most expeditious means (normally to the controlling signalman) any safety of the line incident that action may be taken and protection may be put in place.
  • Carry out emergency procedures when required, including initial HABD examinations (including the use of the Tempilstik).
  • Sign, possess, and read all notices and publications affecting our Traincrew Route Knowledge; maintain and update publications as required for traction and route knowledge and the safe running of trains.
  • Wear full uniform and safety clothing as supplied.
  • Respond to service faults and failures, reporting as necessary to Freightliner Control and/or Help Line.
  • Cover Standards Manager position as and when required (ref to standards Manager JD).
  • Undertake other duties as directed by the supervisor or manager.

Safety of the Line Responsibilities

  • Operate trains in a safe and proper manner in accordance with Railway Group Standards and Freightliner requirements.
  • Be fully conversant with all current operating rules, regulations and notices.
  • Carry out initial HABD examinations.

Statutory Duties

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 et seq.
  • Transport and Work Act 1992.

Principal Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain vigilance when driving, taking appropriate action at signals etc.
  • Adjust driving technique in accordance with prevailing conditions (e.g. weather, speed restrictions).
  • Take prompt, appropriate action to ensure safety of people and equipment in and out of course situations.

  • PTS.
  • Current Rules and Regulations CoC.
  • Driver’s Assessment.
  • Induction – local.
  • Fire training – local.
  • RGS 3251.
  • Initial HABD Examination course.

Desirable

  • NVQ – Train Driving.
  • First Aid.
