Assistant Train Controller
Together, we move what matters. Heavy Haul Rail appreciates the contribution of every role. As an Assistant Train Controller you will work alongside the Train Controller to manage real‑time performance, delivery and operations of Heavy Haul Rail services.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, control, operate and update TOPS, TOPS2000 and TRUST as required for HHR operations to ensure compliance with industry standards, rules and regulations.
- Investigate, dispute and resolve all aspects of the TDA process for HHR services and support the TC in monitoring services and identifying performance improvements.
- Follow up and investigate late starts and on‑route delays in real time to protect HHR’s interests and ensure timely entry of required information into systems.
- Maintain day‑to‑day operation safely, complying with HS&E procedures, the Drug and Alcohol Policy (RGGEN/023) and all relevant safety regulations.
- Carry out input procedures for creation and retrieval of information via TOPS, TOPS2000 and TRUST and advise other reporting locations.
- Support the TC with booking, roster adjustments and resource allocation and monitor schedule errors.
- Archive generated paperwork and ensure records are maintained for agreed periods.
- Provide performance claims, reports and Power BI updates in accordance with contractual timescales.
- Collaborate with other departments and Network Rail to investigate and implement performance improvements and Schedule8 savings.
- Assist and deputise for the Train Controller as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Experience in railway operations and understanding of industry structure.
- Strong railway geographical knowledge.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work under extreme pressure and in emergency situations.
- Good negotiation skills and the ability to resolve problems.
- Strong IT skills, including TOPS/TRUST.
- Keen, conscientious approach, able to concentrate on detailed information for long periods.
- Basic awareness of Heavy Haul Rail vehicle maintenance policies.
- Knowledge of heavy haul train planning process, industry performance regimes, Network Code/DAPR and track access.
- Knowledge of the rail industry performance regime.
