Welcome to Newcastle’s Newest Neighbourhood! Freight Island is one of the most exciting, forward-thinking and disruptive food markets in the world. It’s a game changer, and more importantly, it has soul. We are an urban oasis blurring the lines between a food hall and a festival, where guests enjoy delicious food, great drinks, and live entertainment. We care about the details. How the space functions, how it looks, and how it feels for everyone who visits. To keep this venue running perfectly and looking its best, we need a proactive hands-on individual to keep our spaces safe, clean, and fully operational.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Maintenance Assistant to join the team at Freight Island Newcastle. You’ll play a key part in looking after the day-to-day physical needs of the venue. From setting up event spaces to handling basic day-to-day upkeep, you'll help ensure everything runs smoothly. This role is all about supporting the team, keeping the venue tidy, and tackling simple repair and maintenance tasks. Big moments. Small details. All of it matters. You’ll need to be practical, organised with your time, and confident handling several tasks throughout the day. We’re building at pace, so you’ll need to keep up and keep the standard high.

What You’ll Do

  • Carry out general day-to-day venue upkeep, basic repairs, and painting to keep the space looking great.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of events, including moving furniture and staging.
  • Complete daily site checklists to ensure guest areas are safe and presentable.
  • Work with internal teams to quickly resolve simple maintenance requests.
  • Help manage waste, tidiness, and deliveries across the venue layout.
  • Take feedback on board and respond to urgent venue needs quickly.

What You’ll Bring

  • Some experience in a hands-on role (e.g., caretaking, basic DIY, event setups, or general labor).
  • Practical, common-sense problem-solving skills—you are comfortable using basic hand tools.
  • The ability to work at pace while keeping safety standards high.
  • Confidence working with others, taking instructions on board, and managing your daily tasks.
  • Reliability, physical fitness for lifting/moving furniture, and a strong work ethic.
  • A genuine interest in food, culture, music, and live experiences.

What We’re Looking For

  • Hardworking, proactive, and happy to help wherever needed.
  • Reliable and consistent in your work.
  • Good at solving simple problems on the fly.
  • Excited by fast-moving, collaborative environments.

This is your chance to be part of something big. If you’re a motivated individual looking to help shape one of the UK’s most exciting brands—we want to hear from you.
