Overview

Professional Support Lawyer – Immigration (Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children and Refugees)

East Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership (EMSMP)

37 hours per week

Fixed term: two years (with potential extension subject to confirmation of funding)

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice, support, develop precedents and working practices, research points of law, contribute to the production of briefings, updates, or other materials for circulation, and provide training sessions on immigration and asylum law, practice, and precedents. Representation on casework is excluded.

Qualifications

  • A qualified solicitor/barrister/legal executive with detailed knowledge of law relevant to age assessments of unaccompanied asylum seekers, NRPF and human rights legislation; knowledge of recent developments in central government policy on asylum seekers, refugees and migration issues.
  • Experience of judicial reviews and knowledge of welfare law would also be beneficial.
  • You will have experience of working within a local authority, partner regional agency or equivalent organisation, including responsibility for encouraging and promoting best practice, policy development, advocacy and partnership working.
  • Additionally, you will have the ability to provide training to external stakeholders, to build relationships across the partnerships, to manage conflicting priorities, and to meet demanding deadlines.
