We are seeking a senior systems engineer (or small expert team) to develop a Preliminary Wireless System Architecture for an industrial facility with heavy reinforced concrete structures. This task follows completion of a feasibility and compliance matrix phase. The matrix is already finalized. Your role is to translate validated requirements into a defendable, physically justified system architecture.
Core Objective
The primary engineering objective of this phase is to significantly reduce the amount of physical cabling within the facility, while preserving reliability, robustness, cybersecurity, and maintainability. The architecture must be justified by quantitative modeling — not conceptual diagrams only.
System Context
Wireless monitoring is required for:
- Pressure / depression monitoring
- Temperature monitoring
- CCTV (video streams)
- Fire detection
- Radiation monitoring (non-nuclear zones only)
Rooms include:
- Reactor hall
- Process technical rooms (non-irradiating)
- Offices / control room
Wall thickness: 30 cm to 1.5 m heavy / barite concrete. Power supply available in all zones. Nuclear safety systems are explicitly excluded from scope.
Scope of Work Architecture Development
Develop a structured Preliminary System Architecture including:
- Logical Architecture
- Monitoring domain separation
- Data segregation principles
- OT network zoning
- Trust boundaries
- Gateway and repeater placement strategy
- Room-by-room communication approach
- Concrete penetration strategy
- Evaluation of HVAC ducts or structural penetrations
RF Modeling & Physical Validation (Required)
The architecture must be supported by:
- RF link budget calculations
- Attenuation estimation through reinforced / barite concrete
- Zone-by-zone propagation assessment
- Worst-case signal path modeling
- Bandwidth aggregation analysis
Full electromagnetic simulation is not required, but engineering-grade modeling is mandatory.
HVAC Duct Evaluation
If applicable:
- Evaluate duct geometry
- Estimate cutoff frequency
- Assess feasibility of using ducts as propagation paths
- Quantify expected losses
Comparative Architecture Scenarios
You must develop:
- 2–3 architectural scenarios
- Comparative matrix including:
- Reliability
- Complexity
- Cable reduction potential (% estimate)
- Maintainability
- Risk profile
And clearly recommend one preferred baseline architecture with justification.
Cable Reduction Analysis
For each scenario:
- Estimate percentage of cable reduction
- Identify unavoidable wired segments
- Define hybrid wired/wireless boundaries
- Provide rationale for retained cables
Reliability & Robustness Strategy
- Redundancy approach
- Failure mode overview
- Degradation and fallback strategies
- Maintenance philosophy
Cybersecurity Concept (High-Level)
- Network segmentation
- Gateway hardening
- Data isolation principles
Deliverables
- Preliminary System Architecture document (25–40 pages)
- Comparative scenario matrix
- RF modeling appendix
- Zoning diagrams
- Topology diagrams
- Cable reduction assessment table
Editable formats required (DOCX + diagrams in PPTX / Visio).
This is a conceptual architecture phase — not detailed component-level design.
What We Provide
- Completed Compliance Matrix
- Feasibility summary report
- 3D building model (Navisworks / REVIT)
- Environmental parameters
- Room layout data
Ideal Candidate
- Strong background in wireless systems architecture
- Experience in industrial or critical infrastructure
- RF propagation and link budget expertise
- Experience modeling signal attenuation in reinforced structures
- Clear technical documentation skills
Bonus:
- Experience in high-EMI or shielded environments
Timeline
Expected duration: 4–6 weeks. Milestone-based contract.
To Apply, Please Include
- Similar system architecture projects
- Example of RF modeling work
- Estimated timeline
- Budget proposal
- Availability window
Important
This task is part of a structured engineering program. Successful completion may lead to follow-up work in detailed design phases. Contract duration of 3 to 6 months with 30 hours per week.
Mandatory skills: Electrical Engineering, Engineering Simulation, Engineering Design, Wireless Network Implementation, RF Design.
