We are wanting to build a custom home with a curved staircase with an open living room below on the other side. At the top of the stairs, the upper floor/landing edge looks "free-floating" and my floor truss designer is unsure how to support that area because there's no post going down to the floor below.
I'm looking for someone with residential framing/structural experience who can review my floor plan and truss layout and conceptually explain the right way to support this area so I can relay that approach to my truss engineer. This is not a stamped engineering job — I'm just looking for a clear conceptual solution (e.g., cantilevered trusses, LVL or hidden steel beam, concealed post in a wall, etc.) that makes the load path obvious and buildable.
What I Need:
- Review my floor plan and truss layout around the stair opening
- Explain (in plain language) how this type of "floating" stair landing is typically supported in real homes
- Suggest 1–2 clean structural approaches I can tell my truss designer to implement
- Point out where support would logically go (e.g., tie into exterior wall, hide support in stair wall, etc.)
